The NBA is likely to project a decline in the salary cap and luxury tax for the 2020-21 season due to a decline in league-wide revenue, league sources told Adrian Wojnarowski and Bobby Marks of ESPN.

The league will release their projections as early as Thursday, allowing teams to take them into account ahead of the trade deadline.

Many front office executives believe that the salary cap could drop from a projected $116 million down to $113 million next season.

The luxury tax had been projected at $141 million.

The ramifications from Daryl Morey's retweet supporting Hong Kong sovereignty, which included China pulling sponsorships and television coverage, is believed to have cost the league between $150 and $200 million.

The projected luxury tax figure had been $141 million, which largely impacts teams such as Boston, Brooklyn, Golden State, Houston and Philadelphia that are expected to be luxury tax teams in 2020-21.

Good luck now expecting Tillman to open his wallet.

Excellent news that we will have $100mill tied up in three guards....

Dump Capela's salary and we should be under the tax line.
No need for him anyway. Tilman will request a 6'2 G league guard replace him on a (non guaranteed) min salary.

Don't worry. Morey will work his magic and give away future draft picks as part of a salary dump to teams under cap.

And now revenue will increase. All Chinese are ordered to stay home till February 09 , due to “koronavirus” , all CBA games suspended, world athletics championship suspended, soccer season opening suspended, only thing left to do watch NBA games. So league will be fine, because nothing left to show on Chinese sport TV. Or maybe they try to watch cricket.

Yes but the magic is that they're going to act like we got better from that trade.

    Pretty much.
Also very possible that the CCP will allow again Rockets games.
When there is fear and panic you have to find a way to entertain the crowds.

This is not funny, Morey basically tied his own hands here, and shut the window on Harden's Houston career.

This is all according to the plan, Rockets had no chance to add a third star and can easily duck the tax with minor moves, teams like Boston Brooklyn will be forced to deal with expiring contracts like Tatum, Allen and will be forced to move part of their core to resign them, while the Sixers will be forced to dump Harris or Horford if not both in order to resign Richardson, and the Warriors won't be able to afford Giannis anymore...Morey still playing chess while others are playing checkers.

So you're saying the Rockets aren't gonna use it again?

Mid-Level Exception Will Be Considered 'Priority Exception' In 2020 Offseason

The NBA was already expected to have a bear market this offseason due to the lack of teams with functional cap space, but the anticipated lowering of the cap for 20-21 due to COVID-19 will make the use of exceptions even more invaluable for teams to sign free agents.

"The mid-level exeception is going to be like the priority exception," said Bobby Marks on The Hoop Collective Podcast. "With so few teams with cap space, these numbers might go down a little bit further. Teams that have that $9.8 million exception... you might be able to go get a guy that's looking for $15 million to $16 million. Or you might be able to split that up among two guys getting $10 million each."

The NBA sent out an estimated cap number for 20-21 at the end of January at $115 million, which was down from $116 million.

Welp. Looking forward to wasting more assets to duck the tax and killing the teams future.

Unless he sells, but even then, he'll take a bath on the sale of the team (if anyone is willing to buy). Not looking good at all for Fern t*** and the Rockets.
