Rockets were the team 1 win away from the Finals, due to a Paul injury. Much bigger market than Oklahoma. Is there a secret war chest..

2 of the 3 best wing defenders are gone due to $, and although I agree with the approach to Capela, it does seem like now is not the time to play it safe with $.

OKC paying that much in luxury tax isn’t a good decision...they’re paying championship prices for a 2nd round exit at best

you gotta be smart with your finances

Rox arent "playing it safe" you just dont pay Ariza 15M and they can't pay Luc even if they wanted to because they only have the MLE left and they need that to sign Melo, Melton, Hartenstein and whoever else.

OKC can pay it because they are saving GM salary.

Obviously OKC can't afford it or they would not have traded Anthony for luxury tax relief. Please stop with this nonsense that Ariza and Luc are gone because of the luxury tax. Ariza was priced out and the Rockets got a replacement if not an upgrade in Ennis over Luc.

They can't. That's why they're moving people out. And Adams might be next.

We only saved money by not paying Ariza.

But we max'd out Paul...just like OKC max'd out PG13. As for Luc, we didn't save money by letting him sign an MLE with someone else, because we are still going to spend that money on someone. You only save money by not using the MLE at all.

And you know we will sign Capela at some point. So, what is all this money we didn't spend that we could have?

    Answer: It's *only* Ariza.

OKC doesn't want to pay it, but they are desperate to remain somewhat relevant. They are also tired of being ridiculed for refusing to pay a few million extra to keep Harden all those years ago. Next year at this time they will probably be in rebuild mode and shedding as much salary as possible.

You also want to maintain flexibility even when you're team is competing for a championship because under NBA cap rules you need space to maneuver for signings or trades. You don't want to be that team that watches every opportunity go by because you signed B level players to A level money.

It is only Ariza. However I think it is fair to point out money/tax is likely the only reason Ariza isn’t a Rocket. It is a one year deal only and he was a big part of our defense.

It isn’t fair to call TF cheap at this point. Yes it would have been nice of him to tell Morey to bring him back, but a lot of owners would have balked. Let’s see what happens with Anderson. If we use assets to move him to another team and get a large trade exception and don’t use it before it expires; then I think it is reasonable to question the owner.

They have much richer owners. The guy that came in in 2014 is worth 8bil.

because their GM Sam Presti is clearly the smartest man in the room when he meets with his ownership group.

This is the same dude that has made multiple mistakes that would've costed other GMs their jobs but he's able to convince the owners to keep him and buy into his schemes that just look good from the outside to keep his job. He knows that that team isn't a real contender but since he wants to keep his job, he'll do anything to sell the owners of it happening.

It's in response to all these players going to OKC despite huge contracts. Still a bad team with a crappy star but payroll wise, you have to wonder how they are daring to do it. Or Cousins going to GSW for peanuts. Ariza was a HUGE part of Houston's success because of all the things he did quietly, the opposite of Melo who is delusional and has an efficient game once every 3 weeks.

have to go max out with Harden in his prime for the next 3-5 years. Put together a package to bring in Jimmy Butler , Harrison Barnes , Wayne ellington... or a PF equivalent. look to the bad teams for someone to pull. what they have right now will struggle defensively and there is alot of talent coming of age in addition to GSW stockpiling a new superstar each season =/
