Expected, no reason to let him go unrestricted into the next season.

A full healthy year of Millsap should get them at least the 8th seed in the West.

I forget - does this mean another team can match those numbers, and then Jokic can decide on either staying or going? Or is it the fact that, since the Nuggets are giving him the max, Jokic has to remain on the Nuggets, despite other teams possibly offering him the same thing?

    No.

Same scenario as Clint... IF another team offers something close to or less than those numbers the Nuggets still have the opportunity to match the offer.

One way or another Jokic is staying with the Nuggets.

That's too much. Almost like a 3rd max contract instead of a second.
But they had no other choice. They exhanged extra money so they can keep him otherwise as a UFA next season, byebye.

Since now they will be over the tax the Farieds and Chandlers of the world are about to be on a firesale.

The Nuggets believed that they could lose him, as they are not a market like LA or NY. We will see how it works out. He is a very gifted offensive player, but he will need to be in a situation where his deficiencies are well hidden.

Faried and Chandler have been available for nothing, for some time. This doesn't help the Rockets because this is another team that wants to shed salary.

[edit] n/m this below, I forgot Jokic was a 2nd round pick. below is FRP extension rules.

Rookie extensions after 3rd year are a means to *avoid* restricted free agency. Accepting the 4th yr Team Option is a way to *trigger* restricted free agency. Teams use both mechanisms depending upon how much they want to pay/lock-up the 3rd yr, rookie-scale player.

Embiid got an extension last year to avoid RFA. By comparison, we tried to sign TJones and DMo to lowball extensions, but they both refused to sign, so forced the team option and RFA.

It's not a rule, but typically not many get rookie-scale extensions except stars for the max, to make them happy. Some teams can get keeper, role-players signed for relatively generous extensions, but otherwise, team and player can't agree and Push their negotiations into RFA.

Worth every penny. The Joker is legit, and still improving.

Really good player. I don't think you can win a title with him as your best player unfortunately for them, but you can't let guys like him go.

He's not. He's not even better than Marc Gasol. Hopefully the Mavs sign him to a sheet. They won't but I can hope.

If Clint capela (thinks he) is better than jokic, then does that mean you're saying Clint deserves to get more than $29.5 mil per year?

I think Capela at PF would actually be a perfect compliment, especially since jokic has a decent 3 ball.

Right, I get that the Nuggets can match anything and everything - but I'm asking if Jokic HAS to stay with the Nuggets, if another team offers him the same numbers.

Let's say LAL is willing to give him 5/146.5. Can Jokic decide between the Nuggets and Lakers? Or does he absolutely HAVE to stay with the Nuggets?

Or is this like what @heypartner said; in essence, this is more of an extension, rather than an entirely new contract?

He's a restricted free agent. He can go sign an offer with whoever, Nuggets have the right to match the offer & keep him. But it doesn't appear it'll even get to that point.
