Morey: "We had a fairly large deal (involving picks) but nobody would have focused on that part."

The full context was posted by Clutch on Twitter.

In essence, he had a deal that would have netted Houston a few picks that would have been involved in a larger deal down the line. Any inferences on Morey's thought process? I found this quote particularly interesting..

So basically like we would have traded Gordon out for picks, everyone would have lost their **** over Gordon going but the picks would become valuable in the acquisition of you know who ;)

Feels like he’s referencing an LBJ move (either directly or Ryno type trade) when he says “no one would have focused on that part of the deal”

That's the way I see it. I can't envision a scenario in which Morey acquires multiple draft picks if Eric Gordon isn't involved in any trade. He's seemily the only touchable player on the roster with value.

Love it. I think it's a little presumptuous to name Gordon and LeBron in this scenario. We really have no idea, maybe we're shopping Tucker in part a blockbuster deal for a different allstar level player. All that we can infer here is that Morey is maneuvering with a level of confidence that we can potentially pull off a big deal to improve the team, which is very exciting.

The trade involved us getting a “consequential player”

Wasn’t there talk about Jimmy Butler?

This is obviously fake news. Jimmy Butler grew up in Tomball and doesn’t care about the Rockets:confused:

But if I recall, there has been a wee bit of speculation recency in the media regarding those exact two players, one possibly leaving the Rockets and one possibly joining them. Doesn't seem presumptuous to me.

So Morey makes a deal to get Jimmy Butler.
    >
CP3 makes a call to LeBron to inform him about the Butler trade. LeBron says hold up on that.
    >
CP3 hangs up and smiles at Morey.
    >
Morey tells Thibs nevermind and they both move on with life.
    >
Us with LeBron, them with Butler.

Either or is win-win for Rockets. Lebron is the GOAT but Jimmy is a legit upgrade for a team that took GSW to 7 games.

Between Paul's hamstring and Butler's knee...

I'd rather have the guy who has played 16 seasons in the NBA without a hitch running on whatever magically super soldier serum he takes.

    Meh, I think
meh, I think I have read this every draft, “We almost had a nice deal in place”... I think it’s just to keep us fans happy and content. What do we have “asset wise” to have used to trade up?

    Just my opinion

Chinanu? A Jackson? Zhou Chi? I don’t think EGo would have gotten you anything but a 20-29 pick

I bet the "big deal" was Morey taking $2 million cash from Ferttita, buying a pair of 2nd round picks, then flipping them for 4 future 2nd rounds picks.

Meanwhile, Morey trades for LeBron and everyone loses their collective sh*ts and so nobody focuses on the fact that Morey squeezed $2 million from gangster Ferttita.

Morey is like that. He does things for sh*ts and giggles.

Me too, but if this is the "best" we can do then I won't complain. Just gotta hope they're healthy when it counts.

Even though it bit us this year...
