Silver reiterated that the 82-game schedule is not set in stone, and that the league might be willing to alter the length of the season to accommodate a new 1-16 playoff format.

"In adding the extra week to the regular season this year, we will be able to eliminate completely four games in five nights. I think it's the first time in the history of the league we were able to do that. Plus we have back to backs at an all-time low. If we took the existing format, the existing schedule and then we seeded playoffs 1-16, we'd be adding additional travel. You would have teams criss-crossing the country in the first round."

    • In the 2014-15 season, the Oklahoma City Thunder missed the Western Conference playoffs with a record of 45-37, while the Brooklyn Nets secured the eighth and final seed in the Eastern Conference playoffs with a record of 38-44.

    • The new seeding system would prevent imbalances like this from happening.

    • While no changes are on the horizon as of yet, it's clear that Silver isn't afraid to look at alterations that would deviate from traditional NBA norms.

    • Warriors guard Stephen Curry echoed the feelings of many players earlier in the week when he said he'd enjoy playing in a postseason that included the 16 best teams in the league, regardless of their conference.

    • Silver would go on to explain that the league is not married to the 82-game schedule, and if changing the number of games played each regular season would help change how the league could format the playoffs while assuring players get more rest like they will be getting this season, he would look into it.

It's not going to change much unless indeed it comes with a more balanced schedule. The most sense makes play each time twice, once at home and once on the road. That way it's the most balanced and you pick your 16 or whatever. I agree that with 16 teams the difference between excellence and mediocrity will always be there, however I think best of 3 for the first round, best of 5 for the 2nd and best of 7 for the other two would make it better. That way the 1st round has more upset potential and we don't need to wait for a team to win 4 freaking games when you already know after 2 or 3 who should win. Keeps things way more interesting.

Near term, this is all talk and the owners in the Eastern Conference will veto changes. They benefit from the status quo in every way.

If the plan isn't to change things until 2024, perhaps. A reduced (and "balanced") schedule, playoff format changes and a new CBA all at the same time makes a lot of sense. They better get to work early.

What I would like to see is a Hybrid approach where we keep the same east and west setup until the western and eastern conference finals where it would be a 1-4 setup. This way we still see 8 teams from the west and 8 teams from the east make it but a larger chance that the best two teams end up playing in the nba finals. It always sucked when everyone knew the western conference finals was the true nba finals.

Given it's the NBA... they likely will add "wild card" teams and expand the playoffs to make more money on top of the any changes.

If you going to do this what's the point of even having the conferences.

Why would you reduce games played per season?

What about NBA history and records?

Reducing games played will hinder future accomplishments involving record books

Serious question: Who gives a care about the effect on records?

I think sports evolve and the arbitrary 82-game season isn't best for the NBA going forward. IMO, gameplay could improve significantly if they reduced to ~70.

They should most definitely NOT reduce the mins per game down from 48.

Adam Silver offers up 1-16 seeding compromise for possible playoff changes

LOS ANGELES -- NBA commissioner Adam Silver floated the possibility of a modified playoff seeding system Saturday that could pit the league's best two teams against each other in the Finals without changing the number of teams from each conference that make the postseason.

Because of a recent history of imbalance between the Eastern Conference and Western Conference, there have been some calls to take the best 16 teams per season, regardless of conference. In his annual All-Star Saturday news conference, Silver hinted at a compromise.

Silver said his concept would keep the best eight teams from each conference in the playoffs, but would seed those teams 1-16. In that scenario, if the top two teams were from the same conference, it would set up a possible Finals meeting.

"You also would like to have a format where your two best teams are ultimately going to meet in the Finals," Silver said. "You could have a situation where the top two teams in the league are meeting in the conference finals or somewhere else. So we're going to continue to look at that. It's still my hope that we're going to figure out ways."

As has been the case with other 1-16 seeding proposals, there is the issue of travel. With the current playoff format of 2-2-1-1-1 in all rounds, a long first- or second-round series between teams on opposite coasts would create an unfavorable situation. It would also require a more balanced schedule so certain teams didn't have an advantage in playoff qualification during the regular season.

"Maybe ultimately you have to add even more days to the season to spread it out a little bit more to deal with the travel," Silver said. "Maybe air travel will get better. All things we'll keep looking at."

Getting that type of change would require 20 of the 30 teams to vote for it. That is a stumbling block that made the idea of changing to a playoff bracket including the top 16 teams, regardless of conference, unlikely, as five Eastern owners would have to vote for it. This concept would still allow for an East-West balance in postseason representation. It would also not require a rebalancing of the schedule.

At this point it is just conceptual; there are no plans for a vote. However, it is the furthest Silver has gone in altering the postseason format since becoming commissioner.

"That is something that's gotten serious attention -- not just recently, but over the last few years at the league office," Silver said.

I don’t get how this takes so long. With today’s traveling advantages, conferences as a whole need to be reshaped. And maybe go with 2-3-2 or just best of 5 for 1st two rounds. More spread out, come on...it’s one game every 2-3 days, they used to have back-to-backs in the playoffs and no private planes!!

this may be pro argument because harden and rockets are coming for the ass of all the records, this way it may be hidden away from the public and the old divinities may remain on the pedestal of untouchables

I sent this in to the NBA earlier this year, and Commissioner Silver actually e-mailed me back acknowledging the proposal. I'm shocked how fan friendly this guy is.

1-16 is great but the regular season needs to be balanced out if we're really going to have the best teams and matchups.

    No.

    1-16 is dumb.

The reason the NBA playoffs are boring is because:
    1. You let half of the teams get into the playoffs
    2. Each round is 7 games

But the NBA won't do anything that brings in less money. First round needs to be 3 games, 2nd round 5 and conference finals 7.
Do we really need to see warriors beat utah 4 times in the first round??
