Interesting, Rockets get a B, Lakers get an A

Grade the Trade: Lakers reportedly deal Lou Williams to Rockets for Brewer, 1st-rounder
It's a great start for the Magic-Pelinka regime
The Los Angeles Lakers have reportedly traded Lou Wiliams to the Houston Rockets for Corey Brewer and a first-round pick, according to Adrian Wojnarowski of The Vertical. The move adds another capable scorer to the Rockets’ barrage of 3-point shooters, and gets the Lakers a first-round pick in exchange for taking Brewer, who makes slightly more between now and next season when his contract expires at the same time as Williams’.

    Let’s grade the trade:

    HOUSTON ROCKETS
    RECEIVE: Lou Williams

SURRENDER: Corey Brewer, unprotected first-round 2017 draft pick

    GRADE: B
For the Rockets, it doesn’t address their biggest need, defense, but it does shore up a weakness. Brewer has been unable to keep up with his deep-bombing teammates under Mike D’Antoni, and opponents would routinely play off him, sending more help at James Harden. With Williams, not only will opponents be unable to do so as Williams is a crack shooter, but the Rockets can survive with Harden on the bench more. When Harden sits, the offensive rating for the Rockets drops to 105, a good mark for some teams but paltry for Houston.

Williams brings the ability to create on his own, as he is in the 94th percentile in pick and roll situations, and 92nd when factoring passes. That number is likely to go up when not surrounded by the dreadful Lakers offense, and Williams has high marks in isolation and spot-up. He basically fits with the Rockets’ offense to a T. The defense, of course, is a concern, but the Rockets’ defense isn’t as bad as you would think (14th in the NBA and 11th since January 1), and they can always just rely on starters in the playoffs.

This deal doesn’t shift the landscape in the Western Conference, or help the Rockets match up differently with Golden State. But it addresses a weakness with a strength, and involves only surrendering a pick they don’t need. The Rockets have bolstered their reserves with young players the last few years with Montrezl Harrell, Sam Dekker and Clint Capela. They were not in need of another pick heading to Rio Grande Valley.

It’s a good return on assets, given their situation.

    LOS ANGELES LAKERS
RECEIVE: Corey Brewer, unprotected first-round 2017 draft pick

    SURRENDER: Lou Williams

    GRADE: A
Williams served no purpose for the Lakers. He wasn’t going to be part of their rebuilding plan, and his contract and limitations meant he was never going to fetch significant return. They pick up a veteran making approximately the same money, who will fill up time and play hard, and nab a first-rounder. The pick has little value, but first-round picks should be all the Lakers are pursuing at this point. They didn’t try and parlay Williams into taking on a bigger name for more money, they didn’t give up a second-rounder, they didn’t add a player that needs minutes or a new contract. It’s just about perfect value, and a great start for the Magic-Pelinka regime.

It's an A for the Lakers because Magic. How do you get an "A" and then include "little value" in the explanation as to why the grade was given?

It's cool, happy to have Lou.

They got value, just not value that will show up in the box score. Look at it this way:

    - They were tanking anyways and what better way to do that than with a player as inept offensively as Brewer
    - Brewer himself has a bigger contract than Lou, meaning he is better at filling salary differences (IMPORTANT!)
    - The Lakers also get another first round pick (albeit low one) that they can use in a trade or to draft a player for their rebuild

We get the by far best thing in the trade and get a lower grade.

    Ok.

I don't think this writer truly understands how horrible Brewer is.

Lakers did, that's why they traded for him.

The only way Lakers win this trade is if that 1st round pick (likely to be late) turns out into an NBA level starter

    Otherwise

    Now this is media conspiracy

He says flat out "It’s just about perfect value, and a great start for the Magic-Pelinka regime" and doesn't mention anything about Brewer in Lakers grade and says he doesn't fit in ours. So if Lou for a 1st is perfect value (albeit saying it has little value), then that's at least an even trade.

I guess this is @Carl Herrera's expectation / reality formula and the author just expected us to get more from our first and expected Lakers to fcck up A Lou trade more

Some Laker fans think this was a good trade because they feel the Lakers need to be in full tank mode the rest of this season. Removing a good player like Williams and replacing him with a horrible player like Brewer is good for the tank. They of course would have preferred a little better draft pick in the deal.

I don't think he does either. I think the media hasn't watched Brewer since the deep playoff run and they actually think he's an NBA player lol

Let's say if they get a player equal to Capela, whom I don't think he is great but still solid. I think the Lakers will take it any day.

The Lakers own pick is top 3 protected. They should get an A for understanding they need to tank to keep that pick, adding another 1st to do it is just gravy for them. Morey probably deserves an A- on his own. Trading Brewer and a 1st for something of real value is pretty nice.

    Yesssss!

Why not A? I think we did great for brewer and a pick which will be pretty low.

Great point. We just happened to be the beneficiary of their situation. We really deserve an A though and it's not just because I'm biased. Lou is balling.

I hope Lou will bolster our guard line up. This was the only way to trade Corey Brewer.

Everyone keeps talking about how the pick will be "low" but I thought most draftniks have been predicting a pretty deep draft this year. Not that the Rockets need another rookie right now, but this year that 1st round pick could be better than in other years.

Morey always seems to get another pick after trading one away.
