There's been a lot of talk of players packing on the mass this off-season from Anthony Davis, Ben Simmons and now Clint Capela. During a post practice interview yesterday Clint mentioned that he was tipping the scales at 250 now (he came into the league weighing 212). If true that his a huge weight gain. LeBron is 6'9 250 just for perspective. Does Clint solidify the starting center job now? We all knew his athleticism was through the roof, he just needed to bulk up. Does Pringles agree or will he run with the VET Nene? Thoughts?
I say learn from Nene alot this season then next season unleash the Beast proud of this kid hard work in such short time
I think you begin the season with Nene starting and feel out Capela's stamina. It wasn't clear before that he was ready to log more than 20 minutes per game. That may be even more of an issue with added weight. I think he and Nene will ultimately get similar playing time no matter who starts.
Every player in the league always claims they gained 15 pounds of muscle, or something ridiculous like that.
Exactly. I want to see him stay slim similiar to his rookie year. Remember when he came in the league dunking all on people? Plus him gaining weight only contributes to injuries
That's a lot of weight to get used to, along with hugely increased playing time, it might tire him out if the staff aren't careful.. Hope Nene doesn't get injured too early in the season. The C position depth is paper thin and I don't want to see Capela wear himself out and risk serious injury
I'd rather see lean Capela staying in front of guards, blocking shots and dunking over people like he did in his rookie season, playoffs edition, rather than fat and slow Capela who's only attribute is not getting bullied by other front courts.
He is the age where that weight comes naturally. This shouldn't effect his movement too much. At his height, 250 isn't a huge load.
It doesn't matter how much he weighs. His on court performance is what matters. He'all pay more than Nene if he plays better than Nene. There are myriad examples of historically great players of all body masses. Adding weight could help him in some areas. Could hurt him in others. I hope he focused on his game more and the weight gain was just a function of a solid workout regime, diet and just naturally at his age.
I'm not a fan of quick weight gains. When I was most excited about Capella it was when he was switching onto the Warriors' guards in the playoffs (his rookie season) and somehow managing to stay in front of them. I envisioned him having the potential to become a rare defensive player that would be able to guard athletic/stretch 4's. We've been slaughtered by Aldridge and Dirk in the playoffs before. We never had a real answer. I thought Capella could carve out a role in the league as a specialist. Instead, they're packing on pounds hoping he can protect the glass. I don't like the idea of forcing a player to become something else. Sometimes it pays off, sometimes it doesn't. What makes Capella special? Lateral quickness & agility. What do we need more out of from Capella? Rebounding. You're taking coins from one bucket hoping to improve the other, instead of focusing on what he can already do, and making that better. Hopefully he stayed lean like KG did when he bulked up.
Agree. People forget that Clint is 22 and he came in thin for his frame. If Tristan Thompson can add weight and still be effective along the perimeter, so can Capela. Admittedly, I'm a huge Capela supporter. He is not TJones Part 2. Clint has a clearly defined role, a skillset that fits that role very well and he has a better basketball mind. He has a natural feel for the game that TJones never had. I've said it ever since he guarded Curry in the 2015 WCF.....Capela is the future of the center position, not just for the Rockets, but for the league.
But how much can the breh bench? Also need to bring back Chucky Hayes to bang Clint with his fat @$$ and see if the 250lbs helps.
OP makes it sound like he gained it all this year. Capela said on Media Day he gained about 10-12 pounds. And these pictures make it looks like a healthy progression.
Aren't we hearing a lot of talk that players bulk up but eventually have to slim down, because they get slower and lose some athletic ability? I hope Clint is still able to deliver at this weight.
Lol people worried about a 7' center weighing 250lbs. You do realize that Lebron weighs "250" I (which I believe more than when he weighed 250 lbs back in Miami when he was yolked) and is just fine and a lot older. Capela at 250lbs is still thin, but he should be strong enough now not to get bullied by big centers like Boogie or Marc Gasol.
"Let him learn behind Nene first and then start him next year." What makes you think Nene will play? He will get hurt the first minute he plays....
