You know the Bucks are worried when Chris Anstey challenges your first overall pick and states he would tear him a new one in a one-on-one game :

'I would beat him'
Fellow Aussie Chris Anstey lashes back at Bogut
Posted: Sunday July 3, 2005 7:26PM; Updated: Sunday July 3, 2005 7:30PM

MELBOURNE, Australia (Ticker) - Chris Anstey has fired back at fellow Australian 7-footer Andrew Bogut.

Anstey, a former NBA center, put a formal challenge to Bogut, his teammate on the national squad and the top overall pick in last week's NBA draft who belittled the performance of some of his compatriots.

Speaking on Australian national television, the 30-year-old Anstey challenged the 20-year-old Bogut to a 1-on-1 showdown "anywhere, anytime, and I would beat him."

Anstey said he had been upset by Bogut's comments before the draft about the showing in the NBA of Aussies such as himself, center Luc Longley and guards Andrew Gaze and Shane Heal.

"I would like to think there are three or four Aussies better than him [Bogut] right now," said Anstey, a former first-round pick who never averaged more than six points per game in the NBA.

Bogut, who has signed a multi-million dollar contract with the Milwaukee Bucks, was particularly harsh on Longley, a fellow 7-footer with perhaps the best credentials of an Australian NBA player.

Another former first-round pick, Longley won three championships and had his best seasons from 1996-98 as the starting center alongside Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen on the Chicago Bulls. That did not impress Bogut, who did not like being compared to Longley.

"I've had a better collegiate career than anyone else from Australia that came over here," Bogut said last week. "I'm not as slow as Luc Longley, I'm more athletic, I can shoot better, I am more competitive. So I think it's not even fair to bring that name up."

A clearly wounded Longley said Bogut's comments showed a lack of respect for himself and the other Aussies who had played in the NBA, including Gaze, who unlike Bogut played in the NCAA Tournament title game with Seton Hall.

"I'm disappointed for him that he has made such a clumsy start," Longley told the West Australian newspaper. "He's inexperienced and got caught out. I'd like to see him do well and if he's as good as he says he is -- and I'm expecting genius -- he should make it. But the signs are not good so far."

Anstey chimed in Sunday, saying Bogut had plenty to learn.

"If he reaches the potential that Luc did, with three rings, then he will have done well," Anstey said. "But it will take him [Bogut] a while to get going. He needs a lot of court time, which is something Aussies have struggled to get."

That's funny. I remember when Anstey played for the Mavs. I had to watch him for a couple of seasons. He was terrible, absolutely heinous.

I believe Nellie said he was the "best running big man" in the league, or something like that. URGH!!!

He could've handled it better, but,c let's be honest, he needs to seperate himself from those kind of players and comparisons. Otherwise they hurt your career.

he should really let his game speaks for himself. the only comparison he has with the other aussies right now is they have had nba experiences, some more successful than others, he himself, 0! talking about arrogance!

Yet you seperate yourself from scrubs by your play, not by your mouth.

I am bogut guy for life.

There is nothing he said that is not true and the new papers printed his remarked out of context (like this is the first time it has happened). But nonetheless, Andrew stated the facts. He will end up becoming the greatest Aussie to ever lace it up in the NBA - though that does not say much. The other fella that may give him a run for that honor will be Utes super soph. Luke Nevill (red shirt frosh).

Andrew will make numerous ASG appearances as a player and will have a very very solid NBA career.

Go back to your hole Anstey!

First of all let me say Im an Aussie.

Bogut came out and said he is the best player Australia has ever had in the NBA.

He was right.

Australian basketball has been a joke for years. The fact that a guy like Andrew Gaze can dominate the NBL into his 40's says alot.

Luke Longley was a stiff. has there been a worst center in NBA history that won a championship ring? This is a guy that makes Greg Ostertag look like LeBron!

And Anstey....I though he was dead! Not that it matter to much, a corpse could probably have the presence of Ansty in the paint! I like the part where it said he was on "Australian national television". The should read "He was given 10 seconds at 10:30pm nearing the end of a daily sports show"!

i'm sorry he can't say he's the best australian player to ever play in the NBA because he actually hasn't played a single game yet. for all we know he could could break a leg or get seriously injured doing the jumpball opening night and never play again. i'm sorry but you have to PROVE you're better than those guys before you say stuff like that. he won't have to do much to prove he's better than bums like Antsy, Longley, Gaze, etc, but he still has to GO OUT and do it. the nba just isn't going to hand this guy a great career or even a starting spot he has to go out and EARN that. he cockiness is wearing thin on me considering it doesn't take much for a 7 footer to dominate at the college level against 6'8 and 6'9 centers. he never showed me much when i watched him play that he was going to be more than just a good player at the next level. i watched him play against New Mexico one night and it was OBVIOUS that danny granger was the best player on the floor and i think granger actually had more points and rebounds that game than a 7 ft. Bogut.

I was about to call you out and say, no way, I remember Longley at least contributing here or there, which is more than can be said for Ostertag. As it turns out, looking at their stats...wow are they both pathetic.

Ostertage actually played 28 mpg one year and scored a fantastic 6 points per outing! In his defense, he did grab over 7 boards a game.

Bogut really should be the best Australian player ever after a month in the NBA
