potapenko? after seeing some of the hard fouls he puts out... well... he definitely has the "jvg tough thing" going for him. he'd have yao's back... no question. wouldn't mind having him.

Are you talking "Flood prevention barrier" Dike or "Carpet munching activist" Dike?

It's "Deke"...and we own his Early Bird Rights. Assuming the new CBA is like the old, the EBR's allow us to sign him without using the MLE or vet minimum.

I think they should contact Steven Hunter too.

Even if it's not like the old it still doesn't affect anyone this year right, or is that just for this years draftees?

i think none of those players are surprises except for Walker...he's the TOTAL OPPOSITE of what we need in a PF. I guess the positive is that he can spread the defense since he's a "perimeter threat" but that's about it. Unless he's taking Scotty The Body's money, no thanks

i have a feeling that we are going to end up with walker.

stro is a long shot. simmons is restricted and LAC will match an MLE offer.

the next best on that list is walker. no teams with cap space will give him more than the equivalent of the MLE. for him it might be between us and boston. if the C's want him back they will have to offer more than we can. they might. but walker seems to be our best shot.

as a fall back, i think marshall would be fine. he can rebound, he can block, he can hit the 3 at a 40% clip.

I'm sooo glad that list includes Marshall and SAR. I've warmed to the thought of Stro somewhat, but I agree with Clutch that he's high risk/reward and he is supposedly trying to break the bank.

It seems Marshall will be more expensive than I thought, but we should be worth a look to him. And SAR, he's made big money, been on such horrible teams I just hope he wants to come here and might give us a break.

I remember reading that the Knicks and Kings were interested as well. The Knicks are interested in everybody, so we can probably discount them. But I certainly wouldn't count out the Kings. He'd be a pretty good fit there.

I'm not sure I understand..

The CBA has multiple exceptions that allow over the cap teams to sign or re-sign players to which they have "rights". Full Bird, Early Bird, non-Bird, or Rookie exception...

The Rockets are over the cap but could still sign Luther Head via the Rookie Exception. They can re-sign Deke with the Early Bird Exception.

An additional exception available to over the cap teams is the Mid-Level Exception. It functions independently from the aforementioned two exceptions. Hope this helps...

How many early-bird exceptions can a team have? For example, can we re-sign Deke AND Barry without cutting into our MLE?

Without being too technical.. Early Bird Rights are a function of a team holding the expiring contract of a player who has been on the same contract for 2 seasons. In theory, there is no upper limit to the number of players which a team can have EBR's for.

Yes we don't have to break into exemptions to pay Barry and Deke more than the league min. I think Deke's deal has to be 2 years (early bird) and Barry can be signed at last years rate +25% or something like that, if the CBA is like what he was.

    My rank order:

    1a Stro
    1b SAR
    1c Simmons
(I'd be thrilled with any of the above)
    2 Walker (concern with fit)
    3 DM (old)
    4 Penko

    No Cat?
    No Reggie Evans?

Where's Antonio Daniels? If we've really been pursuing him for two years, why stop now when he's a free agent?
