I have talked about these idiots that live next door to me a little before in the past here. But it can not be understated how obnoxiously stupid and inconsiderate these people are. Last night was a perfect example.

During the week, I normally go to bed around 11 and get up anywhere from 5:15 to 5:30 in the morning. Even then I find myself getting to work late (supposed to be there by 7:30), but it is okay as I just stay over to make up the time. So, I am averaging like 6 to 6 and a half hours of sleep during the week. If I get less than 6 hours, I can become very cranky. Manny doesn't like it when people **** with his sleeping patterns. Manny doesn't like it very much at all.

The one time I really talked about these people in the past here, it concerned their dogs and their lack of following the law. We live in the city limits and we have a freaking leash law. Yet, these people keep their dogs outside at all times of the day and never even think about keeping them inside or putting them in a kennel or fenced up, etc. This has caused a problem in the past when one of their stupidass Jack Russells (sorry but I just absolutely despise that breed of dog) bit me as I was trying to stop my dog, Jake, from going over there. Yes, I am not completely without blame for that situation, but why should they be able to get away with breaking the law? It isn't right or fair that these jokers can do this while every time I take Jake out, I have to put a leash on him. You don't know how angry I get about this. It is also ridiculous that every time I DO take Jake out on a leash around my neighborhood, I have to carry a freaking softball bat with me as I do not trust these dogs (there are 3 of them) and they have been known to come charging in my yard like they are going to eat us or up or something stupid like that.

Well these people have 3 dogs - 2 female Jack Russells and a mutt that the best I can tell is a lab mix. I have no idea what the other part of this mutt is but it has to be the most spectacularly ugly dog I have ever seen. I kid you not, but these idiots next door call him, "Roamy" (meaning he likes to roam, too bad he doesn't roam out of our neighborhood:rolleyes: ). Well Roamy only showed up because these jabronis never got their 2 Jack Russells spayed, so one day they are in heat and here is this 70 to 100 pound dog hanging around. Instead of taking him to the pound or trying to figure out who he belongs to, they go ahead and adopt him as their own. But of course, they don't chain him up or do anything with him that would follow the law as they think that is too cruel and inhumane. At least, they did get a vet out there to give him his shots, which surprises me that they at least thought about that.

So, anyway, since Roamy has been around, the Jack Russells have gotten more aggressive and this has been talked about before; just setting up the background here. Roamy has a very booming bark. When he barks, I can hear him, loud and in stereo. Most of the time, Jake can hear him, too (probably all the time but he is so tired that he probably doesn't care) and he is in my freaking house! Well, guess what happened last night around 11:30 to midnight? Yup, you guessed it, somebody had to come over to these idiots' house and Roamy was having himself a good old time announcing to the whole neighborhood that people were there. I am a light sleeper, so there was no way I was going to be able to sleep through this. So, this continues for like 20 minutes, off and on. Do any of my neighbors do anything about this barking? Nope. And to tell you the honest truth - I am surprised this hasn't been more of a problem. You see these people have activity going on at their place 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. It really is amazing. I was told by my parents that my granny (it's her house that I live in) used to stay up at night and watch from her window what these people were doing. Bless her heart and God rest her soul, but she was crazy the last 10 years of her life and EVEN she knew that the stuff going on over there is not normal!!

But you don't want to know the thoughts running through my head last night - probably the most gruesome was paying a buddy of mine who is a big gun nut to come over there one day when these people are gone and just blowing away "Roamy". I am a dog lover, but that **** has got to stop - when it gets to keeping people up at night and messing with their livelihood (I'll probably fall asleep in meetings at work today), then people get, understandably, upset.

The only problem is that I hate confrontations (in real life, at least) - it is the reason why I will probably never go into management. In the past, I have tried talking to these people and reason with them. They always act like they are going to take care of the problem, but that is it - they are just talk. Calling animal control doesn't do any good because they will know it is me who called (I really am the only person in the neighborhood who is affected by their inconsiderateness) and the last thing I want to have is friction with these people. Yea, they are idiots but I do go to church with them and I don't want things to get even worse than they are now. Believe me - these are the types of people who would probably retaliate against me.

To make things even worse (like it couldn't get any worse, right?), this coming weekend is Bonnaroo and they have an ice business on the side. Somehow or another, they have become the ice contractor of choice for Bonnaroo. These idiots will probably make more money this weekend than I will for the whole year and it is not like my job pays me poorly (at least for the area of the country I live in). So, I have a bad feeling that there are going to be people coming in and out at all hours of the night all week. And guess who will be out there to announce to the whole world that these people have visitors? If you said Roamy, then you get a gold star! So, what do I do? I guess I will see if it gets any worse and if it does, call these people to complain (I have been known to leave them messages as they like to not answer the phone a lot of times). But it pisses me off something major that I have to go through this ****.

Sorry for the longass thread, but I had to get this off my chest. I guess this is more of a rant than anything else, but if there are others who have had similar experiences with dumbass neighbors, I guess you are free to share those experiences with the board in this thread.

Killing Roamy won't get to the root of the problem.

Kill your neighbors. Any sympathetic jury would understand.

Sorry to hear it. I have the same problem.

Although I am not a very light sleeper, so I usually get through the night, but it is very distracting when I am on the morning throne.

I have often thought to myself, "Self - What are you going to do?"

I'm not the type that will murder the dog, but the thought has passed through my mind.

Actually, I'm not even the type to own a dog.

    BUT...

In this case, if you can't beat em join em.

Buy the biggest bad ass dog you can find and train it. Take it for it's daily walk. If Roamy gets outside and wants some...

Oops - I dropped the leash. Ya know the dog IS pretty big.

When your dog eats the other dog, then find a nice farm to sell your big dog to.

    Case closed - Sorry Roamy.

    Manny,

I can sympatize with your apprehension about confronting your neighbors, but doing nothing will only mean that things will get worse.

    Here's what I would suggest:

    1) Find out your local noise ordinances and dog laws. Get the specific laws (i.e. their number or name) and get a of copy them.

    2) Meet with your neighbors in a neutral setting where you can both sit down and face one another. This will convey to them that while you aren't threatening them, you are serious and expect them to pay attention.

    3) Be specific about your problems. Don't say "Your dog is annoying me," as that will only make them defensive. Instead, explain your work/sleep schedule and say that on these dates, your dog woke me up/your dogs attacked me while not on a lease/etc.

    4) Tell them what you are doing to help alleviate the problem. For example, you should point out that you always keep your dog on a lease to avoid confrontations and that (here's a suggestion) you have taken to wearing earplugs at night. However, you then need to point out that these actions can only do so much.

    5) Tell them specifically what you expect them to do to remedy the problems. Don't tell them "Shut your dog up." Instead, tell them "I expect you to keep your dogs inside between the hours of X to Y and they should be on a lease at all times. You should also explain why the law entitles you to make these demand - cite it to them and give them a copy.

    6) Give them a deadline for compliance. In your case, you are probably entitled to ask for the problems to be dealt with immediately, but I would still give them a week's time. The key is to give a specific deadline date, not a time period. So in other words, if you meet on Wednesday June 8, the neighbors must be complying by Wednesday June 15.

    7) Tell them what you will do if they do not remedy the problem. Obviously, threatening to kill their dog would be counterproductive. So make sure that anything you promise to do is legal, whether it be calling animal control when their dogs are loose or filing a noise complaint against them when Roamy barks at night.

    8) Finally, point out that you have tolerated their dogs in the past and have avoided taking action even when you were entitled (I'm sure the Tennessee laws would allow you to have animal control take away the dog that bit you). Explain that you want to be on good terms with them, but that they have to meet you halfway.

    9) Give them a chance to respond once you've said all this.

    10) Finally, after the meeting, send them a letter (if you can send both a paper and email letter, that would be ideal - certified would be even better) that summarizes your conversation. Be sure to include the problems (and dates), how they affect you, what you want them to do, and what you will do if the problems aren't remedied.

I realize that much of this depends on the local laws regarding dogs and noise, and that you also may have done one or more of these things already. However, I think presenting your problem in such a way will maximize your chances for fixing these problems.

    Good luck.

When I got sick of the neighborhood cats, we borrowed a trap from the city's Animal Control dept. We caught three cats, all of which were taken away by animal control and killed.

I don't know if they have dog traps. Call 'em and ask.

I would suggest buying a decent air pellet gun, and practicing with it until you can hit a target the size of a dog from about...ohh, 40-50 yards away.

I think it's pretty ridiculous that you'd consider having someone blow that dog away before you go over there and tell those guys off.

Actually call the police EVERY night about the noise. As long as you have a legitimate reason to complain within the law they have to go check it out. Eventually they will get tired of going out there all the time and put and to it one way or another.

The cats in my neighborhood use my backyard as a hunting ground. My vegetable garden attracts the birds, and the cats lay in wait and pounce. I clean up a dead bird from my backyard once every 7-10 days.

Yeah, they use the same traps to catch the smaller breeds of dogs. Bigger dogs might require something different, I don't know.

But next time the Jacks and Roamy are running around without their leashes, catch them and take them to the pound. Tell the pound that you're no longer able to take care of them, please adopt them out or euthanise them.

Police will tell me to call Animal Control.

    sub,

Your post is a great one and what I probably need to follow although I have talked to these people before. But the problem is I am in a no-win situation:

    1) I don't do anything and you are right - it is probably going to get worse

    2) I talk to these jabronis and they get pissed off at me and then there is friction that I really don't want to deal with.

I almost think they know this, too.

But I will see if it happens again tonight or any other day this week. If it does, then I will call them - I just don't feel comfortable talking to them face-to-face. I have so much anger about this (and still from getting bit) that I am afraid I will say stuff that I will regret. But it really sucks. :(
