Is one really better then the other? I need some music at a few coffee shops I run and don't really know anything about em.
I don't much about either except I recently heard a radio commercial for XM advertising that, if you buy a receiver, you get another one free. So, you could get it for your shop and your car.
Here's a link that compares both of them side by side. http://www.radiosatellite.org/ I bought my father XM for Christmas, and he really enjoys it. It has all the MLB games, which he likes, but I'm sure coffee shop goers don't give 2 schits about that. The programming in terms of music is really a wash. Sirius has NBA, NHL (errr...), and NFL, but again that's not much use in a coffee shop. Sirius also has NPR for what it's worth, but you can get that just on normal free radio. Either one would probably suit your needs fine.
XM has a wider selection of music channels. Sirius has, by far, the best sports and news selections. I have Sirius and I enjoy it though I wish they had just one or two more music channels. Other than that, it's great.
If you havn't heard Sirius signed on Jimmy Buffet to broadcast his Radio Margarittaville 24/7. Its comming out this summer. I'm sure when this happens they'll take a few channels away and add some new ones. I have Sirius and I love it. I wouldn't say there is one better than the other, it all depends on what kind of music you like...I've heard this analogy: If you buy a CD for all the songs go with XM...if you buy a CD for 2-3 songs that you like..go with Sirius meaning Sirius is more hit based, you'll hear songs that you'll know and have heard before, and hear them repeated a little more. XM plays songs that you don't hear that often, more B-sides less repeats. Take a look at thier websites and see what fits the coffee shop
I also have a show on SIRIUS. You can catch me spinning on REMIX 62 Saturday night 10pm EST Re-Broadcast Tues 5pm EST www.djriddler.com
I've had both, but in my opnion Sirius is the best option for my music tastes, and getting the new Buffett channel, Eminem's channel 45 and the upcoming Stern addition only boosts their stock. XM does get a little bit better reception than Sirius, but this shouldn't be an issue in the coming months. Holy Heeeell. I had no clue that was a Clutch member's show? Seriously, we jam your tunes every Saturday night when we're on our way out. Excellent, EXCELLENT show!
I have infinite CD's and mp3s, and I have XM. I just appreciate that they often play music I've either never heard or have forgotten about. I do miss not having NBA broadcasts, but ultimately I care more about the music.
It's mainly a program feeding from his cafe in Florida playing most of what the vacation channel (#95?) plays currently, with live feeds from concerts, jams, etc. Or so I've heard.
