I've just placed an order to convert to wireless internet with RoadRunner.

To my surprise, they will be here in about 24 hours.

Anybody have any last-minute advice for me? Was this a mistake? Will it be thrilling?

This is a life altering moment for you.

I've had two life altering moments:

High speed internet in my home (1999)
TiVO (2003)

That's it, that's the list.

I hate it. More inconvenient logoffs than there was with just the standard cable line. It also seems to be down more as well.

But I'm not the one paying the bill, so whatever.

Your mileage may vary.

My wireless cable was completely unreliable for the first year that I had it, I could count on being online only about 70% of the day. Anytime I did something as innocuous as use my cordless phone in the same room or (I'm being serious here) put a Diet Coke (metal) can down on my desk, the signal would go out.

I bought a new laptop a few months ago, and it never goes out. Ever. I was lazy with the old setup, so I blamed my computer, when in fact it was the Linksys router setup that was horrid.

Test everything out, don't get lazy like me and blame it on "computers just being computers."

what do you mean wireless cable?

can you just get cable, and then buy a wireless router, a wireless adapter, and then make it wireless yourself?

I finally went wireless about a year and a half ago -- I can only remember being down 2 times -- once reseting the router and modem fixed it and the other was some kind of mix up on the provider end.

I never will not have wireless now.

If you have desktop computer you can still hard wire that to the router.

$79 for complete set-up.

Monthly rate for two networked computers remains the same.

Yea, thats what I did. My laptop has that built in Intel Centrino crap... works fine. My stupid neighbors don't put a password on their Internet so sometimes I leach off of them

Yeah, thats how I've got mine setup. I didn't know they were offering an all wireless connection now. I guess it would be worth it if you didn't want to fool with installing a router.

That's not a bad deal. It costs around that much to get a router and adapter. And they do the installation for you. So that's cool.

Just curious. Can you describe the setup? Is the wireless built into the modem itself? Or did they bring a router to hook up to the modem?

You can get a wireless router and a wireless card for about $25 TOTAL after rebates. It's all incredibly easy to set up, and paying Roadrunner for the service is just throwing your money away.

I installed my wireless system myself in like 10 minutes. It kicks butt. If you have a cable modem, just go out and get a linksys system and network cards for the computers you want to hook up. Its pretty cheap nowadays, like under 200 for the entire thing.

It didn't work for me when I tried to run an ethernet cable from Time Warner's wireless router to my PS2. I could NEVER get online to work playing any PS2 game. Whenever I tried to play someone on Gameday or Madden it would ALWAYS lose connection. Once I got my own wireless router which I ran the same cable from I never had the problem. Be VERY wary if you are into online gaming.

eh...

the cheapest I've done it was $20. Got two Belkin G routers for 10 bucks each after rebate from CompUSA. Used one of them as an Access Point. Did it for my parents because just the router wasn't penetrating all the walls between the two computers.

for myself i got a netgear B model for $7 after rebates and my laptop already came with an adapter.

but my point is. things aren't always on sale. so if you got a good brand like linksys + adapter. 79 is not bad. plus labor costs a lot so it really isn't bad. also, rebates sometimes don't come. like i haven't gotten my netgear one yet.
