Samsung shows 2.5m monster monitor

By Tony Smith
Published Thursday 16th December 2004 16:44 GMT

Samsung has unveiled what's possibly the world's largest plasma monitor screen - a monster 255cm (102in) high density panel codenamed 'Atlas'.

The resolution is a mere 1920 x 1080, little bigger than most larger PC monitors, but with a contrast ratio of 2000:1 and a 1000 candlepower per square metre brightness rating, the giant screen should leave viewers feeling sufficiently in among the action.

Indeed, the whole thing measures roughly 2.2 x 1.3m, so you need a gargantuan living room to put it in. An equally colossal wallet would come in handy too: Samsung didn't reveal a price, but it's likely to be substantial. Samsung did say it will be ramping production between January and June 2005.

The new screen comes almost a year after Samsung showed off its 200cm (80in) plasma display panel. ®

Wow, that's as big as the projection screen I was looking at buying... and it's HD. Probably costs around $25,000-$35,000. :D

A buddy of mine that works retail told me that those flatscreens typically last about 3 years or so and then they're done. Anyone else heard this?

If I was dropping 35k on a tv like that one, I'd probably splurge on the full warranty...

The price will surely be over $100K.

I believe LG made a 71" plasma and sells it for $75K.

Imagine how far back you have to sit to watch either of those TVs.

what a crazy waste of money that thing is going to be.

Every soon to be broke rap star will have one. Too bad the box won't be big enough to save and sleep in later.

Not too far. I'm guessing 15 feet would suffice.

Samsung to sell 80-inch plasma TV Portable music player with super-long battery life also planned

Reuters Updated: 6:32 p.m. ET Jan. 5, 2005 LAS VEGAS -

Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. will release an 80-inch plasma television set, a portable music player that runs for 42 hours on one battery and a DVD recorder that copies one disc directly from another, the company said Wednesday. Those products are among a broad range of media devices Samsung plans for 2005, all on display at the Consumer Electronics Show here this week. Samsung plans to release the 80-inch plasma TV in May but did not name a price. It bills the display as the world's largest plasma TV, though Samsung has actually demonstrated a prototype 102-inch set.

The long-life MP3 music player, with prices ranging from $120 up to $200 for a 1 gigabyte model, supports systems to copy-protect music and includes popular MP3 player add-ons like an FM radio tuner and voice recording capabilities. It will be available this month. The dual-tray DVD recorder, permitting direct disc-to-disc copying, is set for the third quarter with a $500 price tag. Samsung says it can copy two hours of video in 30 minutes.

The world's electronics companies have descended on Las Vegas this week to showcase the latest in home entertainment and productivity technology, and the buzz created by new products at CES can make a major difference at retail, particularly among heavy-spending "early adopters," as consumers who rush to buy the newest products are known.

Other new products in Samsung's lineup include a camcorder with a five-megapixel camera lens, wide-screen LCD TVs up to 57 inches, and a number of home theater systems.
