opposite Carlos Arroyo, who was busy shooting (21 attempts). Jazz win over Sonics (Allen with top assists -6). Lopez took 3 shots.

Man, I'd love to pick a guy like that up cheap. Jazz got him for nothing.

09/17/02: The Jazz signed Raul Lopez to a 3-year, $2.5 million contract with a 4th year team option worth $1.7 million.

    -----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Here's the line on Arroyo, for comparison. He has just a 1-year deal. He is FA. Does that mean they can't exceed the MCE to resign? :

    TRANSACTIONS
09/29/01: Toronto signed Sean Colson, Carlos Arroyo and Mark Davis to non-guaranteed, minimum salary contracts.

01/07/02: The Raptors waived Carlos Arroyo. The salary earned while on the roster will continue to count against the team's cap.

03/07/02: The Nuggets signed Carlos Arroyo to a 10-day contract.

03/18/02: The Nuggetts signed Carlos Arroyo to a second 10-day contract.

03/27/02: The Nuggets signed Carlos Arroyo for the rest of the season.

08/15/02: The Nuggets waived Carlos Arroyo.

09/10/02: The Jazz signed Carlos Arroyo to a one-year, minimum salary contract.

07/30/03: The Jazz signed Carlos Arroyo to a one-year, $1 million contract.
    ------------------------------------------

Jamal Tinsley also had a nice night, with 11 dimes.

    TRANSACTIONS
10/22/03: The Pacers picked up the fourth-year contract options for Jamaal Tinsley and Primoz Brezec. Both are now guaranteed through the 2004-05 season.

Arroyo will be a restricted free agent. If the Jazz were over the salary cap they wouldn't be able to sign him to anything more than the MLE (Mid-Level Exception). However, the Jazz will be about 25 million under the cap. The only way Arroyo will go to another team is if someone is willing to seriously over pay for him and the Jazz choose not to match. There's no way another team can out-bid the Jazz for his services.

    Raul Lopez - 9a, 17 min.

    Mark Jackson - 9a, 23 min. on Feb. 17th. 10a, 24 min on Jan. 25th

anyone can have a good game.

    Lopez a/to 1.6

    Jackson a/to 3.8

Jackson is past his prime and presumedly Lopez hasn't reached his so Lopez might be worth a look in the future but for now we are ok. IMO

Arroyo is a better point guard than Lopez, IMO

Damon Jones had 12 assists and 0 turnovers for Milwaukee yesterday.

I think we cut him twice.

THere was this dude named Shandon or Brandon or something who played for Utah and looked awesome, and also this guy Isley or Easley something who looked good too. They are awesome.

Somebody should give those guys big contracts.. I'm sure if they have success in Utah, they'll have it anywhere.

So perhaps we should have tried to get their coach instead?

Yeah, for sure. I just think that what he has done this season with Utah pretty much proves he is an awesome coach (ducking :D).

Either are better POINT guards then what we have right now. They know their roles.

I never really understood why we did that - the guy is a flat out 3pt threat as well....

On Lopez, those a/to numbers are worse than Francis

I don't believe this is entirely accurate. Utah will have to leave at least 1 player available in the Charlotte expansion draft. My guess is that it will be either Borchardt or Pavlovic and whichever one it is will almost certainly be gone given their low $ contracts. Utah will then need to sign and/or re-sign a minimum of 9 players without the beneifit of an MLE.

Next, Utah will only have their enormous cap space until after the re-sign of renounce almost all of their FA'S. For example, Utah will only have ~$10m in cap space until they renounce or re-sign Ostertag.

A team like ATL could run a gambit on Utah by making a bid on Ostertag and once Utah re-signed Ostertag, ATL would have nearly the same cap space as Utah to bid on Arroyo. If Utah hiccuped, ATL would take Ostertag at a reduced rate. If Utah signed both Tag and Arroyo, ATL (and others) would be able to make solid offers on Lopez, Gircek, Raja Bell, Jarron Collins, Keon Clark and/or Williams.

IOW, the Jazz have a boatload of cap space, but they also have a boatload of decisons concerning filling their 9 roster spots. Overpaying to keep Arroyo and Ostertag limits the $ they have for other FA's.

Lopez is in the 2nd year of his rookie contract. The Jazz will definitely excercise their 4th year option this summer. Raja Bell is also under contract for 1 more season after this one. Collins will be a restriced free agent this summer. RFA's can be selected in the expansion draft, and he will most likely not be protected. The Jazz will have early Bird rights on Giricek, and Arroyo. This means if the Jazz were over the cap the Jazz can match any offer up to the MLE without having to use their MLE. Keon Clark was traded to Phoenix in the Tom Guglotia trade.

These are the players likely to be protected. Arroyo, Bell, Harpring, Kirilenko, Lopez, Pavlovic, Giricek, and either Mo Williams or Borchardt. That will leave Collins and either Borchardt or Williams availble for the expansion draft.

That's with Ostertag counting againsdt the cap at 13 million as the free agent amount. Re-signing him will actually improve the amount of money the Jazz have to spend on other free agents.

Milwaukee playing against Orlando, 4th quarter has just started.

    Damon Jones:

    29 minutes, 16 assists, 0 turnovers.

    Asking again:

Why did we cut that guy (more than once)?????

Yeah, I looked at the papers again this morning for assists and went "Whoa!"

I guess it helps to have Micheal Redd and now KVH is hitting, too.

Looking around, there's quite a few teams getting good assist numbers.

    Amazing...really amazing.

And I think he is a great 3-point shooter, too.

AND - didn't he play for UH as well?

Looks like Rashard Lewis is not the only homegrown talent we let slip away.

Damon Jones has always had a good A/TO ratio, IIRC
