Not the drug/alcohol kind!

Back on September 15th, I ripped the patella tendon off the patella of my left leg taking a piece of the patella with it. That night I had surgery to re-attach it. Since then I've spent a week in a knee immobilizer, a week in a brace with 0-degree flex, a week with 30-degree flex, and this week with 40-degree flex.

Today I start rehab with a PT and I am dreading it. I think that this is the closest I will ever come to torture in my lifetime. The knee is still swollen somewhat and bending it even slightly makes it feel like it is going to explode. The quad muscle in my leg is atrophied and looks to be tender enough for Hannibal Lector.

I need some good success stories about PT/rehab. Hope some are out there!

I tore an acl many years ago and had to go through rehab. My leg had atrophy too and it never has gotten back to the size of my other leg. I'm the only one who notices it but I can tell and it bugs me. Bottom line: suck it up and work your ass off in there. You'll be much better off for it in the long run.

i had surgery on my knee twice. but my problem was i strted to play sport to soon (twice). so now i will never play basketbal at the level i played it. i didn't go to america to try to play for a good college. So my advise do not start to soon with everythng. just try to relax and when you can do the exercise.i know alot of people who did do that and they were al better.

It's not that bad - ACL/partial MCL/meniscus surgery 14 months ago - BUST YOUR ASS. That's all I can say. Do exactly what your pt says...no more, definitely no less. It sucks at first, but it does get better. I'm pretty much 100% now, and I've talked to guys that slacked off & they never fully recovered, and a couple of them re-injured their knees within 2 years.

Of course, my therapist was one of the Power Dancers, so I had a little extra motivation.

Yes, when I broke my hand. A large man stepped on it on the basketball court when I was scrambling and diving for a loose ball. Man that sucked.

That sounds painful GU goodluck with rehab -- if I may ask how did that happen?

I was running hard (playing basketball) and came to an equally hard stop on my left leg; the knee just came apart. As soon as I got some support under the leg, it never hurt that much.

My first rehab was mostly evaluative. I don't think the real work will start until week after next. We have to work within the Orthopaedic doc's parameters of maximum 40-degree bend and 50% weight on the leg. I got some electrical stimulation for the quad muscle and she gave me some exercises to help strenghten the quad muscle.

She was cute but no Power Dancer.
