Trade to Expos pending Gonzalez's approval

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
ESPN.com news services

Juan Gonzalez, a two-time American League MVP, could be headed to the National League for the first time in his career.

The Texas Rangers have made an agreement in principle to trade Gonzalez to the Montreal Expos, ESPN's Peter Gammons reports.

Details of the trade were expected to be announced after tonight's game between the Rangers and A's.

The Rangers announced they will not use Gonzalez in tonight's game but gave no further details.

Gonzalez has a no-trade clause in his contract. The outfielder has 72 hours to accept or turn down the trade.

One friend of Gonzalez told ESPN.com's Jayson Stark last week: "He'd waive his no-trade for Omar. He loves Omar."

Gonzalez told team officials he would not have any immediate comment about his situation.

Rangers manager Buck Showalter confirmed the trade during his regular gathering with reporters before tonight's game. General manager John Hart didn't immediately return phone messages.

"We could have gone under the radar, but we wanted to be up front and give Juan the time he's earned by his contract situation," Showalter said. "We could have used him tonight, but we won't."

Texas traded outfielder Ruben Sierra to the New York Yankees on June 6 for a minor-leaguer, and the team is expected to make more moves before the July 31 trading deadline. Several teams have expressed interest in Rangers closer Ugueth Urbina, and starter Ismael Valdes and outfielder Carl Everett are also potential movers. All are eligible for free agency after this season.

"It's an unfortunate part of the game," said Showalter, in his first season at Texas' manager. "You are always looking to make your club better short-term and long-term, and help yourself financially. But sometimes it depends on what order those are in."

Gonzalez is in the second year of his $24 million, two-year deal he signed to return to Texas before the 2002 season. The Rangers would likely pay most of Gonzalez's remaining salary.

Gonzalez is hitting .286 with 18 homers and 50 RBI.

Great move for Texas. If they can get something out of Everett - that'd be good too.

Montreal is making a mistake.

"No word yet on who would go to the Rangers if Gonzalez accepts the trade, but it seems certain that either Seung Song or Josh Karp, perhaps both, would have to be involved. Gonzalez would take over as Montreal's right fielder for now and move to left after Vladimir Guerrero returns. Brad Wilkerson would probably shift to first base, although he can also play center. "

Juan Gone back home to Puerto Rico, I think its safe to say he will accept. Even if they only play a handful of games there

I just don't understand what Montreal is doing. They traded a couple of really good prospects last year for Colon, then they dump his salary, and now they're apparently trading two more really good prospect for Gonzalez who they'll probably have to dump as well. Crazy...

i think the expos are trying to win this year because Vlad Guerrero is a free agent after this year and they have no intention of trading him so it's kinda up in the air if he'll be back next year. So this is their big shot at making some noise and just getting in the playoffs at the very least.

Doesn't matter anyways...

"Just weeks after unloading Ruben Sierra, the Rangers attempted to part with Juan Gonzalez as well. He wouldn't let them. MLB.com reported Tuesday that the two-time AL MVP vetoed a trade to the Expos"

This was clearly a move by the Rangers to try to get all the players of Latin American decent, especially Puerto Ricans, off their team. First Pudge then Sierra then they tried to move Juan Gone and they want to move Urbina, not Puerto Rican but Venezuela is close enough for me. I think there is an obvious connection that needs to be made here.

They were also apart of the conspiracy against Sosa that Pedro and Sheffield felt was going on.

So what's next, trading away A-Rod? This is a post where the are warranted - you're simply reading too much into things.

As for MLB.com's report....it hasn't been vetoed yet, but Juan's agent says that, more than likely, he will veto the deal. In any case, we'll know by the weekend.

On 740 they said that in order for him to accept a trade, he wants a couple of more guaranteed years added to his contract.

You catch on quick...I'm glad you saw that coming. Actually, they are going to force him into "early retirement" so he can become a full-time Viagra salesman.

Door-to-door? If so, I think I'll pass on the free demonstration.

I disagree...your creativity thinking about A-Rod being traded is noteworthy, however A-Rod was born in America. So he stays with the Rangers, plus he has a great contract that benefits the Rangers 1st and himself 2nd.

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/bas...11/arod_terms/

Take a look for yourself and you would see how silly it would be to trade A-Rod. I mean how often do you come across a guy who is on pace to get nearly 90 rbi and who has those handsome good looks! Derek Jeter and his fat face and Nomar and his nose that would make any plastic surgeon salivate have nothing on A-Rod. $23 million this year is nothing for a player who is worth at least 5 to 17 times that from all the extra revenue he brings in and from all those games he singlehandedly helps the Rangers win.

I'm glad you are thinking about other possible trades for the Rangers, but you need to realize they are only looking to trade foreigners. Remember Hideki Irabu? Where is he now? NOT ON THE RANGERS...you figure out why.

If they are trying to cut payroll then why are they willing to pay his salary? They want to get that Puerto Rican out of there ASAP. Your agrument = Swiss cheese.

They traded Juan Gone because they need to rebuild, and in the current state of the game teams who want to dump high priced stars have to pay his most of their contracts to get it to work.

Sierra sucks, they did good to jettison him.

Urbina is an impending fa, who some teams could use at closer.

You really are reading way too much into this.

And Sammy Sosa is talking out his a** like Pedro did about this conspiracy stuff.

I really hope that you're actually white. Otherwise, you're a ****ty rep for Puerto Ricans and Dominicans.

they're trading Gonzo for two tier 1 pitching prospects, not because of money. Hicks has enough cash to buy Latin America. They realize that the Expos are a very small market team that has to play in Puerto Rico, of all places, so they're very desperate.
