I was in Houston this weekend for the first time since Minute Maid Park was built and I was shocked at all of the construction going on. Not just around Minute Maid Park and the new basketball arena but all over the damn city. Just one thing kept going through my mind as I was driving down town “think god I don’t have to work here and drive through all of this every freaking day at 8 and 5!”

That being said I can’t tell you how impressed I was with the new ballpark. I thought that The Ballpark in Arlington where the Rangers play was as good as it gets but Minute Maid Park out does it. I drove past the park at about 11:30 Friday night and they had the roof open. From Crawford Street I could see straight into the stadium and at that point I know that it was something different. I have seen a lot of pictures of the park but none of the pictures truly does the park justice. It never dawned on me that if the roof is open and someone really gets hold of a good pitch they could literally take it out of the park and into the street.

Saturday the game started at 3 and I wanted to get to the park early so I could get a decent parking spot and take a look around the inside of the park. The roof was closed when my son and me got there and I spent most of the time walking around in awe while my son was much better at catching all of the neat little things in the park like sign on the left field wall that shows the type of pitch and speed. Of course he also found the little area behind the first base line in the lower concourse where the kids can try their luck running bases and pitching. We then found our seats, listened to a little girl sing the national anthem and kicked pack for the game.

When the game started I was kind of worried about Wade Miller because he has not had a great year with the injuries and all and I really wanted to see Roy Oswalt but damn Wade was good Saturday. The Astros dominated from the start and the Rangers never really had a chance against Miller. Which brings me to the topic of Jimy Williams. He has got to be my least favorite coach of all time. He sucks and that is just my opinion. Why take out Wade when he is so dominant? Has anybody bothered to tell little fat Jimy that he is not in the American League anymore? He does not know how to coach National League baseball and that is why the Astros are having a bad year…once again that is just my opinion. Oh yeah can someone please tell little fat Jimy that there is suppose to be two freaking M’s in Jimmy!!!! Oh well I think Jerry Narrin (the Rangers Manager) sucks too.

Anyway the park was awesome and the Astros were great, at least on Saturday and my son and I had a great time.

Other tidbits. I can’t wait for the new basketball arena to finish up. If it is as great as Minute Maid Park then Houston will really have something to be proud off. I drove by Reliant Stadium several times as well and I thought that the Astrodome was supposed to be bigger but it appeared to be dwarfed by the new Stadium. I would love to see the inside of that Stadium and my son is already hitting me up to take him back to Houston during football season so we can see a game from the inside. With the three brand new sports complexes, Houston has got to be the envy of all sports cities in the free world.

Anyway all the construction aside my son and I had one hell of a good time in Houston this weekend. I hope it does not take me so long to get back again. From one jealous out of town sports fan, well done Houston.

Primarily because he's coming off an injury and that was the most pitches he had thrown since coming back...

When I first saw Reliant and the Astrodome side by side last summer, I nearly drove off 610. Its very nice.

I wasn't impressed by Minute Maid Park. The field is nice, but the outside appearance and downtown construction was blah...

Reliant Stadium is huge but don't forget a big portion of the Dome is underground.

Crash:

Since none of my other fellow Houstonians thought to do this, I will: Thank you for all the nice words about our city. I'm a born-and-raised Houstonian and take a lot of pride in my city and it's nice to hear things like that from an out of town visitor.

I agree on all accounts in fact. Jimy DOES sucks, MM Park IS beautiful (that retractable roof action is pretty slick, huh?), Reliant Stadium IS going to be a one of a kind, and hopefully we ARE the envy of every sports city.

Sometimes it seems like Houston gets the national shaft when it comes to the recognition we deserve. So, on behalf of all Houstonians, thank you.
