"The Knicks, Blazers, Warriors and Clippers are bombarding the Bulls and Rockets with all sorts of tempting offers for the draft's top two slots, reveal sources. New York wants Yao Ming; the other teams want to call Jay Williams their own. Carroll Dawson would be expelled from Houston if he gave up the rights to Ming, whereas Jerry Krause can't screw it up by retaining Chicago's No. 2 position. Trading it would expose him to unnecessary risks and criticism. "

Personally..I DO NOT WANT ANYONE FROM THE KNICKS!!...Camby is too injury prone..Spree is not a prototypical SF BUT he is an EXCELLENT defender that might help keep Kobe in check

Blazers are the team that intrigues me because they have LOADS of talent...any ideas or trade proposals??

I can see the Rocks trading down to the 3rd pick from the Warriors as I beleive the Rocks like Butler than ANY OTHER player in the draft..Maybe Fortson would be a nice addition??

We all know we would love to get our hands on Odom and maybe also swapping some picks (they have the 8th and 12th pick)

Man am I exicited about this draft!!!

Any ideas on trades or suggestions??

A trade with the Blazers that would net us Wallace would do us good. A fresh start would do him good too.....

RRG,
Anything from NY is not even worth considering!

GS only has Jamison and the #3. Is Jamison a 3 or 4? We already have a young stud named Griffen that fits that bill.

Trailblazers are a mess. They have no cohesion because every guys on that team has a bad attitude. They can keep them all.

The Clips......ah the Clips. The demands for the pick are obvious here.....BRAND, Maggette picks #8 and #12. With a draft as deep as this; a trade such as this is a winner. Butler, if he falls, at #8 and maybe a project at #12. We could also package the #8, #12, #15 & #38 and move back up and grab another SF if we wanted to.

The Clips are our best bet. It would undoubtedly cost us KT and other players in the process, but sometimes you have to sacrifice to make a move.

NOTE: Notice I didn't mention Odom here. Why? Do we need Odom if we can draft a quality SF in the draft especially with Grif filling the SF position part time?

i agree camby has been injury prone his whole career and when he's not hurt he's an ok player, i like spree but would only give the #15 for him he would help bring the rockets some defense and though he's offense comes and goes he is a great slasher to the basket and can run a fastbreak something the rockets need to do more of.
i agree the blazers do have great talent but a bad attitude the only way i would take rasheed is with the #15 and kenny though
i think the trailblazers would'nt do that.
jamison is very over rated he shoots way too many shots and does'nt make enough and i agree we already have eddie,
the clippers have what i want, dont know what we will get but it cant be to bad wouldnt mind getting odom 8 and 12 for #1 and kenny

The only team worth dealing with isthe clipps. Thomas,Norris and the number 1 for Odom ,8 and 12 would get my attention. We could draft Marcus with the 8 or 12 or deal those picks too. I think they should just draft Ming and be done with it.

Odom and #8 would be perfect for us. Odom would fit perfectly with our team at the small forward and we could take Borchardt at the 8, filling both of our needs.

Knicks - Nada. I like Spree but not enough to take his $12.4m/yr contract and the fact he has a Player Option in the summer of 2004.

GS - OP has reported that Jamison is not available...and his contract is huge anyway. The talks probably center around a pick swap and $4.9m in contracts for Fortson. I'm probably alone on this, but I find it a perfect opportunity for the Rocks to screw up.

Blazers - 'Sheed and Bonzi are FA's and can not be part of draft day trades. No other Blazers interest me.

Clipps - I guess the majority here want Odom. If we get Odom, I just don't see us as anything more than a first round exit with Cato and MoT as our low post options. The Clipps with MoT, Odom and Kandi were 15-67. Do we really want to give a major playoff competitor the #1 pick?

i would love to get fortson. he is a great rebounder, but we need either a 3 of a 5 and fort is a 4. jamison is a great scorer, but cant realy handle the ball as much as we would like.

i dont think i need to talk about why we should trade with the knicks

i agree that the best trade would be #1 and kt to the clips for odom and #8

however we could potentialy have a better team if we just draft ming.

Dont count NY out!! outside of Houston, they are the only team that seems interested in taking a chance on Ming ($$$$$marketing NY $$$$$). Everybody else wants Williams.

I say that NY might give the Rockets the biggest bang for the buck. Now before I get SLAMMED, let me explain. They are so desparate (and dumb) that they would give up Spreewell, Camby, future draft picks, you name it for the MARKETING RIGHTS TO MING.

So they might be the perfect 3rd party team to trade with. They give us #7 & Spreewell (and ?). We then trade Spreewell to ? for a top-notch veteran, then we pick up Butler/Woods/etc.. at the 7. They are so desparate, we might even get a replacement 1st rounder next year.

Here is a wilder idea: We get the #7 & spreewell (they take back some of our garbage contracts), then we trade KT & #7 for Odom. Then we trade spreewell for a veteran Center (?) or to Grizzlies, Denver, etc for their draft pick (for butler). That would be the ultimate scenario. We would end up with Odom & another top notch player (or draft pick) and get rid of some garbage contracts.

This is just a few ideas. I think the Clippers are the best trading partner we have, but as desparate as teams are to get Williams, NY would pay twice as much to get Ming. Especially with Layden throwing money away.

I am not convinced of Ming, so I am willing to trade. I don't think any body is willing to give us a proven franchise type player, so I need a high draft pick back. I want Butler, Dunleavy or Wilcox, so I would not trade down below number five. So if I am the GM, (or Steve -apparently), I'm talking to Golden State, Memphis and Denver. I don't see Chicago trading.

Golden State - I think they are apretty good trade partner. First off they seem to want to trade up. Second they have the third pick, so assuming Williams then Ming, we get Butler, my personal favorite. Nobody on thir team knocks me out, but I do like Dampier and Foyle at center. Also I think Dean Garrett is a great back up center. I also like Arenas, Troy Murphy and Jason Richardson- if they would let him go. I see giving up the number one, Rice and Moochie. We get back the number three, Dampier, Garrett, Arenas and (maybe) either Murphy or Jefferson. The salaries basically work on this one.

C Dampier, Cato, Garrett, 15th pick
PF Griffin, Taylor, Thomas, (Murphy)
F Butler, TMo, some Griffin
SG Mobley, (Jefferson), Torres
PG Francis, Arenas

Memphis - I don't see them parting with Gasol or Battier. But I think Dickerson is available, and possibly Stromile Swift. The gist of the trade is Our number one for their number four and they release us from our unprotected number one next year. I think that alone favors Memphis, so I ask for Dickerson or Swift. We have to give back salary, but both are fairly low priced.

C Cato, Collier, PF committee, 15th pick
PF Griffin, Taylor, Thomas, (Swift)
F Rice, (Butler/Dunleavy), TMo
SG Mobley, (Dickerson),Torres
PG Francis, Moochie, Brown

Denver - from looking at their roster, no wonder they suck. We get McDyess, Posey and the number five pick. We give up... I am not sure what. Rice and Moochie basically work salary wise, but then we need a back up point. Maybe they throw in their second round pick and Juan Dixon slips...(Pat wake up, wake up). Rice's contract ends in two years which misses by one year when Denver hopes to make a free agent splash. Maybe Taylor and filler - but the numbers are hard and we don't have any contracts expiring next year. maybe resign Willis or Williams - but this is a difficult trade to work out.

C Cato, Collier, PF committee, 15th pick
PF McDyess, Griffin, Taylor, Thomas
F (Butler/Dunleavy), Posey, TMo, some Griffin
SG Mobley, Posey,Torres
PG Francis, Brown

No Trade

C Cato, Ming, Collier, PF committee, (15th pick)
PF Griffin, Taylor, Thomas
F Rice, TMo, (15th pick)
SG Mobley, Torres
PG Francis, Moochie, Brown

A couple of side notes. With the 15th pick I take the best player over 6'10" (hope I didn't just pull a Spinal Tap). I think there will be some decent ones and look how long it takes to develope these days. Also, all of these scenarios leave us with a glut at power forward, so we do have some trade bait. However I an not inclined to trade Kenny Thomas, and I suspect that nobody will take Taylor right now, and I definately don't move Griffin.

When I first wrote this up, I was just looking for the best trades keeping us in the top five picks. I wanted salaries that worked cap wise and somethin that both teams could live with. However, after I was done, I added the proposed rosters. Looking at those, I like the Golden State trade team the best. No real holes and pretty deep at each positon.

Well, first, I think we're going to take Ming. Then maybe get someone like Stoudamire, Hilario, Nachbar, whoever is a quality player who drops, then maybe someone like Dixon at #38. Perhaps we can pull off something to get Odom, but I don't know if we have what they'd want, and they can probably use him in combo with their picks to get the 2 or 3 in the draft, so they can get Williams or Wagner...

But IF the hype is incredible, and the offers get REALLY good...

You might be right about NY, but I doubt it. I think that Golden State and Chicago would have huge value for Ming as well, even though they aren't trumpeting that, each having large Asian populations and both big dollar advertising markets... Forget Portland...

It all has to do with how high people value Ming, and whether they will come up with offers like when Sampson and Dream came on the scene... none of us will ever forget that we were offered Drexler and the #2 pick in the draft for Sampson, and we could have ended up with Olojuwan, Jordan and Drexler on the same team. Someone might have even traded the #5 pick for McCrae, and we could have added Barkley to that mix... so, the more the hype grows about Ming, the better... (BUT is Ming really viewed on the level of a Sampson or Dream? probably not... ) ... the more we act like we don't want to trade him, the more people know they have to offer us. I bet it won't be until the fever pitch of the draft, before people actually pull the triggers on the great offers...

I don't think we want anything that NY has to offer, but what matters, is do they have players that someone else with a high draft pick(s) wants... such as Chicago, Golden State, Memphis, Cleveland, LAC, etc. ... or even Minnesota.

So, for instance, if NY knew they had to blow up the team, and go to the lottery for the next 3 or 4 years, unload all their high price contracts, stock up on picks and rookies, and start with a francise player, such as Ming, then they MIGHT offer 2 of Sprewell, Houston, Camby, their #7 pick, and take Rice and Taylor in return. Would Minnesota give up KG for Sprewell, Houston, Norris and the #7? ... Allan Houston is a BYC player, so I'm not sure how he could work in a trade...

NY/MIN OK, I just ran this by RealGM, and it works...
  • NY receives #1 for Ming, Rice, Taylor, Thomas
  • MIN receives Sprewell, Houston, Norris, and the #7 pick
  • HOU recieves KG
... don't know if Minnesota would do that... maybe if NY threw in a 2004 pick... I don't know...

NY/who else? To be honest, I don't see anyone else, since we'd have to take in huge contracts that we wouldn't want.

Golden State: Would Golden State want Ming enough to give us Richardson and their #3 pick? At this point, I wouldn't want anyone else on their team, including Jamison. But, I'd Richardson in a second... and move him to SF, which is where I think he belongs. Our SF problem solved. I think he'll eventually be better than Odom, along the lines of Vince Carter. Then trade down with LAC for their 8/12, take best players available. If we wanted Odom that bad, I'm sure LAC would do a Richardson/Thomas for Odom swap.

Chicago: Would they want Ming enough to give us Curry and their #2? I doubt it... but if they did, I'd take it ... then take Williams. (this would be the closest thing to the Sampson/Jordan/Drexler deal we turned down)

LAC: I don't think they'd want Ming so much, they'd make the trades we want. They do need guards, and they'd love to pick up Curry somehow... but I think they consider Williams and Wagner to be the two big talents of this draft, and they'd probably trade their 8/12 to get either of them, and perhaps put Odom iin the deal. So, for instance, if we did a deal with Golden State and picked up Richardson, they'd probably give us the 8/12 for the #3.

Domino trading: It never works like this, but just dreamcasting, if there were a fever pitch for Ming, Williams, and LAC wanted Wagner ... imagine making trades first with Chicago, then swapping with Golden State, and then with LAC, ending up with Curry, Richardson, and the 8/12. That would be incredible... but I seriously doubt that would happen ... just dreamin' ... must be late ... not using realistic logic here...

Sherlock,

First off I loved your post with the list of mock drafts. Thanks.

But as to this post, you ask if other teams want Ming bad enough to...

We are not trading Ming, we are trading the first pick. That can be Ming, but I think most teams would take Williams.

I did actually go through all of the mock drafts, and yes Ming was usually listed as number one. But that is because Houston is picking. We are solid at the Williams position and weak at the Ming position. On the lists that just ranked the players and were not team specific, Williams was the top pick.

This is one of the reasons that I favor trading down. I think taking Ming is using the number one pick to take the number two player.

i started a thread while back about this, one rummor in portland was or still is, portland might trade sheed and DA FOR A TOP TWO PICK. offcourse this goes without saying, there has to be some major cap fillers involved to make the trade work, but it can be done.

I think saying that Borchardt would fill our need at center is jumping to conclusions. I don't see him being any better than Chris Mihm.

Rocks should package the 1st pick, the 15th pick, Kenny Thomas, Terrence Morris and a future unprotected 1st round pick for Odom AND Brand

What do you guys think??
