What are they made of? is it a hard plastic? or more of a ceramic material?

I think it is a type of resin. I know that a lot of these types of things are made out of a molded resin product (wood byproduct and plastic mixed together) and this feels very similar. It is heavier than plastic, stiffer than rubber (he he) but not as delicate as ceramic.
