Good for him, I guess. So how are you spending this Astros off day?

    Also, not sure if thread-worthy.

I am all for bringing back old Astros... but him? I guess we can let him scout. Was it Drayton that wouldn't sign the prospects that he drafted? Or did he just not cut it at all?

    To do what?

And I hate losing before an off day. Just sitting here stewing in my own filth.

Obviously no one here was a fan of Purpura as a GM. Generally being a regional scout is nothing to scoff at, but his talent track record is pitiful and worrisome.

Purpura really set us back with some of his GM decisions (07 draft and lack thereof, Woody Williams, Jason Jennings, Preston Wilson)...really everything he did was a step backwards. I don't know what the FO sees in him to think he can evaluate talent, but I do trust Luhnow, so screw it.

Sidenote: as much hate as Ed Wade got, he's really had his fingerprints over vital parts of our team's success. Wade drafted Springer, Kuechel, Castro, signed Altuve, and I believe had drafted/signed Marwin Gonzales, J.D Martinez, Paredes.

As long as he's upgraded his scouting software that said Jason Jennings would be a good player to trade for, I'm good.

i suppose maybe he was good as a scout before he became a decision-maker..... but if things go wrong in any way in this year's draft, i blame him.

The good news is, the Astros have much better prospects than Willy Taveras and Jason Hirsh... and his software was right about those guys not really having much lasting power in baseball.

You're ignoring Bobby Heck. Wade wasn't really hand-on with scouting/drafting as much... but he did delegate that very well.

If only it was Gerry Hunsicker, sure; but Purpura, meh. But I am firmly in the "Trust Luhnow" camp.

That's a true statement. Jason Hirsh...man, I had high hopes for that guy.

Well, Luhnow has built up the farm system so so well... to the point that some potential quality prospects will have to go to make room for others.

Perhaps bringing in an outside set of eyes (somebody not biased/attached to anybody) could help with making some of those decisions.

Part time regional scout for the DFW area, so basically he'll cover the Frisco games.

FWIW the farm system was verysuccessful when he was involved in the 90's. It isn't as if he sucked at everything, he had a large role in the successful Hunsicker administration. He was an abysmal GM, but that's not his job now.

From GM to part-time regional scout? Wow. I'm not sure many people could survive that kind of a fall.

    1994: Astros--Assistant Farm Director
    1995-1996: Astros--Director of Major/Minor League Player Relations
    1997-2004: Astros--Assistant GM/Director of Player Development
    2005-2007: Astros--GM
2008-2011: Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of Minor League Baseball
    2012-2014: Rangers--Farm Director/Player Development
    2015: Astros--Regional Scout

He could get other higher position jobs but isn't interested in moving. He was offered a fairly high position within the league offices but didn't want to move. He was not a good GM but he has had a lot of success at lower levels. He is also a very good person that will work hard in his limited capacities.
