Robert Horry was such a GREAT entry passer to the post. One thing we do miss from Parsons is his creative passing. Our guards suck at giving Howard the ball when he has his man pinned.

LOL @ Tom Gugliotta's legendary defense against Horry at 2:42 mark. Glad they showed that in slow mo.

Also the the deathstare Hakeem gives to the ref at 5:30.

As Gene Peterson would say, "this is Houston Rockets basketball!"

I miss being able to identify with a championship brand of play.

Sorry, our current offense looks and feels so damn gimmicky.

Maybe I'm just getting old, but I hate it.

Wow I miss Hakeem. He was just an amazing player.
They are actually double teaming him at the free throw line.

Weren't there some rule changes that made our good old iso offense either illegal or too easy to defend against?

I miss these days, because we had the best player in the NBA on our team. I don't feel like Dwight or Harden are capable of becoming the best player in the league, that's why we need a 3rd star.

Not sure what video you're watching but Dream in the post is far from ISO ball.

You may be thinking of the Francis/Mobley era.

Rony's greatest achievement was not on the basketball court.

Notice how Olajuwon is so decisive with his moves. As soon as he receives the ball he makes his move. He does not wait for a guard to clear out or do any unnecessary dribbling or holding of the ball. There's no time for the defense to double team and when they did double early Hakeem passes out quickly. This is what Dwight needs to do. Make quicker decisions on offense.

It was also far easier to get post position back then... since it was illegal to double the post without the ball.

Back then, your options were either front the player (and leave the weak-side open), or give up position with expected double team help from the wing.

Thanks to eliminating illegal defense rules, its basically eliminated the big man post-up game in the NBA (and this was ever-present during the Yao era).

There is a lot that the current team could take from this video. Look how much deeper Dream posts than Dwight, how much faster he goes into his moves, the entry passes, spacing... A LOT could be learned from 6 minutes of video. Watching Dream makes Dwight look like he is moving in slow motion.

I still miss Murph with Worrell although I used to turn down the tv and listen to Gene and Jim. :)

Maybe so,but I was thinking more of what Nick more accurately described:

Exactly. The takeaway is that, that was a polished machine. Everything was done perfectly... It's like watching the Spurs when on their game.

Whether it's individual lessons - Dwight, take a seat. Post deep, post fast, post aggressive, make quick moves and decisions, quickly push a fronting defender out, etc.

Whether it's team lessons - spacing, knowing when to cut, making quick, appropriate decisions, etc.

Ultimately, these aren't just post-up comments. Pick and roll, baseline screens, whatever. You need to make quick, smart, decisions.

McHale gets a lot of flack for lack of an offense... and rightfully so... BUT, offense is something you put in, in practice. In games, it's going to come down not to sets, but to general philosophy and chemistry. And he's right on the philosophy. They need to make quicker decisions, move the ball more, make the RIGHT decisions, etc. If you've got two defenders on you, swing it. Set hard screens. Make hard cuts. Don't bring your defender to a dribbling Howard, etc.

    Not rocket science.

No, its more because back then, you couldn't front and double, or double the post without the ball without being whistled for it.

Dwight and Yao would have been unstoppable on a nightly basis in the 90's... on the flip side, Hakeem, Barkley and McHale would have some issues posting up and getting good position in today's game.

Its an unintended consequence of the NBA wanting the game to be more like it is in Europe... with an emphasis on shooting/penetration, and less so on posting up and isolation.

Dwight needs a fade away. Sure he has one, just freaking use it to keep the defender honest.

A face up would also keep them on their toes as well. What is so hard about doing an inside pivot?

Look at Dream creating at the free throw line, lol, he was ridiculous.

Yup, this could be a training tape. Of course, Howard can't do everything just like Dream (no one can), but there's a lot there that shows a well oiled machine, know how to use the post, get into position, and make moves quickly.

I love how his team mates recognise when Dream may be trapped and cut accordingly for him to find them for an easy bucket. The chemistry and trust is so evident.

Dream just goes. Gets the ball and moves quickly, three dribbles maximum. Finds space, steps between, fades, goes under. The man is an artist.
