Hinkie should re-negotiate JRich's contract and extend him non-guaranteed

Got to thinking about Brandon Haywood and Keith Bogans (both players I wanted Morey to try to acquire because they have larger non-guaranteed deals) and how we could possibly acquire such a contract. And I found a candidate.

    Jason Richardson

He's on an expiring contract that can be renegotiated because Philly is under the cap.....way under the cap. JRich has some value (minimal) as an expiring contract to Philly. But his trade value to Philly would be greatly enhanced with a simple renegotiation raising his salary up to around $9-$10 million this season and extending it 2 more seasons with 4.5% raises. This puts an extra $3-$4 million in Richardson's pocket...something he's likely to see the value of doing. Worst case scenario is Philly has to pay him the money and can't trade him down at the deadline. Guess what? They've got to pay out more than that. Money has to be paid somewhere.

Lastly, Jason Richardson being paid $10 million with 2 seasons after this one that are non-guaranteed (with no guarantee dates) at $10,450,000 and $10,900,000 respectively becomes a very desirable for playoff teams like the Rockets to have a desire to acquire because of the flexibility it gives them to participate in free agency by creating unbalanced trades (since Richardonson could be traded again while non-guaranteed and subsequently waived).

This appears to be a no-brainer to me and I'm wondering why Hinkie hasn't already done it.

Bad for team culture. Why dude getting paid strictly for nothing? Is he on the court trying to help the team win? I don't think so. Players will be upset.

GM's don't make decisions and negotiate contracts based on players not being upset.

None of the 76ers are on the court to help the team win so they'll probably be cool with it.

Interesting thought, but there's absolutely no reason for the Sixers to do such a thing at this juncture.

Right now, the Sixers are swimming in cap space and can extract additional assets by absorbing other teams' unwanted contracts. They've already done that with OKC (Thabeet) and CLE (Bogans) in the past few weeks. And that's just for (largely) non-guaranteed contracts.

Now, if they get past the February trade deadline and THEN want to explore renegotiating Richardson's contract prior to the March 1 deadline for a trade next summer, THAT might be an interesting allocation of the money they'd perhaps otherwise have to pay to meet the minimum team salary.

Good thought. You're just getting a bit ahead of yourself.

Considering the team is trying to tank, I can't see how they would care.

Since the amount by which the Sixers end up below the minimum team salary cap gets re-distributed to the Sixers' players, you bet your ass they care about whether the team gives a huge portion of that money to renegotiate the contract of a "teammate" who isn't even helping the team on the court.

But basketballholic is still right that MANAGEMENT shouldn't get too hung up on that (legitimate) concern from the players.
