lots of threads with pissed off people. understandably so. one decision by one man (bosh) turned this offseason from a gigantic success to a colossal failure.

however there is a lot of hypocrisy going on around here, so i wanted to set a few things straight:

    1) "morey messed up with bosh". morey cannot tell bosh where to play. morey had to have some assurance from bosh's agent that he would come and was going to sign the deal in order to make the moves that he did. if someone went back on their word, that's not something morey can control. indications lean that way, as morey always knew that if the heat lost lebron, they could full 5 year max Bosh. he gambled they would rebuild, which would make bosh free to leave, and that the assurances he had were enough when the time came to move lin. obviously didn't work out that way, but that's bosh's fault right? he changed his mind.

    2) "treating players like assets". indications are that morey traded lin to a place that he wanted to play. he didn't have to. morey traded Asik because he was unhappy being a backup. he didn't have to do that either. If your goal is to build a championship team, you have to be able to manage your roster fluidly. even the spurs do, who you all seem to think are so classy. they jettison players all the time when they either get too expensive or when their role can be served in a more cost efficient way. welcome to the salary cap. that morey accomodates players' wishes when he can is about all they can and should expect. they are contract labor just like people on oil rigs or blue collar america.

    3) "he didn't have to give parsons rfa one year early". again, if all he wanted to do was treat players like assets then no, he didn't. and parsons would have been pissed. and his agent would have been pissed. and the rockets would have lost him next year for nothing anyway, with zero chance he would come back after the rockets screwed him for a year. it fit into the overall plan of the summer to grant parsons rfa early, but it was also the RIGHT THING to do for the relationship with the player. in retrospect you cant say "dont treat players like assets" out of one side of your mouth and then say "oh, except parsons, feel free to screw him over" out of the other.

    4) "we have no depth". where did pat beverly come from? how about lin? how about dmo and patterson and hayes and canaan and covington and daniels and jones and greg smith and mike harris and ish smith and steve novak and aaron brooks? the rockets have an enormous history of being able to bring serviceable players out of the draft, overseas, and the NBADL. for you guys to be upset at losing lin and asik and parsons, ok i get it, but to act like we have to have a roster of 1st round draft picks to win is silly. the rockets have never had that. they have always tried to surround the core of the team with quality players on affordable contracts. how can you guys ignore the last ten years of history just because things didn't go right with morey's gamble on bosh?

again - just trying to set things straight. this offseason has been pretty awful, but that doesnt mean we get to act like we're so smart and the organization is stupid. stuff happens. we'll be ok. so will they.

I disagree with #4 on the basis that we need "sure things" on our team instead of "maybe" role players. Given that we have maybe a 2-3 year window to contend before either Howard becomes a FA or gets pissed and demands a trade, we need to surround them with people who can help immediately (and remember, even a trio of Wade/Bosh/Lebron needed a whole year to get into rhythm). Although it is possible that Nick Johnson or Canaan might blow up, we're again playing with fire when we don't have a large margin for error.

the Rockets will bounce back, but the window is closing and this offseason so far has been a step backwards.

Unfortunately there was no "for sure" thing other than Asik who didn't want to be here anyway and Parsons who is so overpaid that we would not be able to get other role players in areas we also need help. Lin is the furthest thing form a sure thing as there is.

So really, at worst we are where we were last year. Except now we have a potential lottery draft pick and a traded player exception to work with to throw in a trade between now and the deadline to upgrade the team.

I agree, and would add to your list the people who accuse Les of being cheap because we aren't in the luxury tax bracket. We were definitely going to be paying the tax if Bosh had come and then they matched Parsons.

The agents bandy around their players like commodities, but the GM isn't meant to treat them like assets.

    Never really understood the logic.

Great post! And I trust Morey, in that while he is certainly not flawless, he is capable of seizing opportunities (Harden) and relentless in executing on his vision (Howard).

When you go interview for a job, you don't do the same thing? Accentuate your skills and experience?

And if your employer is overtly crass about treating you like fungible assets, you don't get pissed?

If so, you should come work for me. I need people who know their place in my workforce.

Anyone who doesn't expect to be treated like an asset by their employer is quite frankly pretty dense. Because those same people sure show no loyalty to their current employer when another employer offers them a lofty raise.

It is my honest belief that, under the right system and coaching, the set of role players we had - Beverley, Asik, Parsons, and Lin - would be strong enough to contend. Not dominate like a Miami, but could come out of the West like a 2010 Mavs and win the 'ship.

Lin IMO is a "sure thing" in the sense that he will get you 15 ppg if you give him 25 minutes and let him play his game. He will turn it over and won't dominate the opposition consistently, but that's why he's a role player on the Rockets.

Parsons salary was discussed at length on another thread - with the way the salary cap is projected to rise and with the going price of SFs, giving him the max isn't ludicrous, albeit it would be a coinflip in terms of being "right move."

Asik is who we know he is, but he doesn't want to be here...so there's that.

I agree that now we just have to make the best of it. We're not sunk, but we're definitely not as good as we were last year. It'll take some prudent maneuvering by Morey to fill our holes at PG and C.

I completely agree with point #3. I think it's a good faith move by Rockets not to exercise the option on Parsons. Even if they know Parsons' worth is that much, they would probably still do the same regardless. If anything, Parsons should leave Rockets in a good term.

I remember two summers ago people were whining and calling for Morey's head because he "lost" Lowry, Scola, and Dragic, and collected a bunch of "assets". A few months later, Morey pulls off the Harden trade, and people act as if it was a magic act, as if his collecting of assets had nothing to do with his acquisition of a star player.

    Great perspective.

Only bone I have to pick is the premature Linjaculation trade. There was no need to pull the trigger on that deal until you get a true commitment from Bosh.

In doing that the Rockets not only weakened the team (yes... Lin actually is a positive for this team despite his warts), but they took away a key asset in the deal. Now the earliest pick the Rockets can include is a 2017 pick along with the NOLA pick. To get in the conversation for a top all-star player in trade, you need to have at least 2 or 3 first rounders to even get in the conversation.

Rumor has it (saw a Tweet from hoops critic) that apparently Bosh did give a verbal commitment and then backed out, and the Rockets front office was infuriated rightfully so. If that's the case than it softens my stance a bit.

    This is a great post.

There's just way too many raw emotions right now and everyone is saying things without actually thinking.

Matching Parsons means that going forward, our core was going to be Harden/Howard/Parsons as our big 3 with absolutely little to no room to add significant pieces around them with so much of the cap going to that big 3.

Parsons was not worth it, plain and simple. 15 million per year is way too much spend on a role player. Unlike Bosh or Ibaka, Parsons isn't a star player playing in a lesser role. He is a role player who tries to be a star player. It was never going to work as we've seen last year. A big 3 of Harden/Howard/Parsons aren't better than the big 3's of San Antonio, OKC or the Clippers.

Not matching on Parsons is going to be a blessing. It's already a blessing because now we open ourselves to flexibility now and into the future. All we need is some strange bounce of the ball (aka like the Harden trade) and we will be okay, maybe better than we ever thought. Patience.

I'm pretty sure the rumor is true about Bosh. And some insiders did say he was all but ready to sign the papers until he suddenly backed out and signed back with Miami.

Either way, we were going to trade Lin. If not now but at the deadline. He might of had more value at the deadline as an expiring but what's done is done. We can still make moves to fill the point guard position (Jameer Nelson) and be better at the point guard position than if we had Lin.

#3 is so spot on... This whole "treating players like assets" thing is not at all specific to one team.... EVERY single NBA team does it. If you don't play well, the team will look to trade you. That's all that Morey does. The Rockets will pay however much money they need for a good team that can compete and if you play well they'll make sure you get paid. Morey had no reason to make some of the moves that he did this offseason, but he did them with the players in mind.
