Pretty sure this was already discussed, to some degree, in the Berkman or Oswalt thread but whatever.

With too many retired numbers, Astros should reintroduce numbers

I don't see why it matters. There are 90+ other numbers to chose from. It's not like they are running out of jerseys.

Wilson, Umbricht, and maybe Kile should be the only jerseys the Astros retired along with Robinson by MLB. If you want your jersey retired, you gotta die. Biggio and Bagwell will be remembered in many ways. This is only way the fallen are remembered by the Astros and it would be special if they weren't diluted in my opinion.

appreciate that Dierker said, but what a PR nightmare if they actually unretired some guys' numbers. Their families would **** a brick

Only decision worse than retiring Umbrict, is un-retiring a number.

Jimmy Wynn absolutely deserves it. He was a HOF caliber player that was greatly under appreciated.

    Bagwell & Biggio are obvious.

    Ryan is deserving.

Scott, Cruz, & Dierker are all special circumstances. Guys who go beyond the stats when it comes to Houston baseball.

Wilson is a special circumstance given his production and unfortunate death, but JR Richard falls into that same circumstance, though he survived his stroke.

    This dumb argument again.

Between this and the whining about the signs, this streak of losing years sure is ramping up the estrogen in a lot of you.

I agree that the Astros should re-introduce all of the numbers ... except ... they should only retire a number when one of their players goes into HoF. Like Nolan Ryan or Biggio next year.

As an alternative, the Astros could have a "ring of honor" where their number is honored not retired.

Sounds like they can't make a case for which numbers wouldn't or shouldn't have been retired.

Article says Ryan was a no-brainer. Dierker says Cruz was "special".

It is what it is... the Astros just retire a lot of numbers despite no HOFers or championships.

The Cubs have 6 retired, all since 1980. No Championships in over a century.

It's not like the Astros have retired 20 numbers or something.

2nd week in and we're talking about retired numbers. It's going to be a long season.

Brewers have retired 4 numbers. Much less success than the Astros.

    1, 3, 4, 5, 7, 8 (twice) 9, 10, 15, 16, 23, 32, 37, 42, 44, 49

Those are the Yankee retired numbers with #2 to be retired soon, #6 basically retired, #21 sort of retired, #51 and #46 to be retired potentially...

The Astros don't need to worry about this for awhile yet. Although I would tell them to learn from the Yankee mistake and don't retire numbers.

Please feel free to start threads on important issues. Frankly, minor league player development, seeing how young Astros perform at MLB level, and whether Swoly gets free furniture seem to be the only pressing things that are really worth discussing for the rest of the season. Maybe seeing if a veteran player gets good enough to trade at deadline will creep in at some point to be relevant to discuss.

The Astros are boring. They are not very good and have very few young guys that have a lot of potential.
