I don't really care much about ESPN personalities, but it is kind of interesting that among all those chosen, three different Rockets were picked as "Defensive Player of the Year." Omer Asik was picked and so was Patrick Beverley (by David Thorpe).
I was saying the other day that Beverly was an elite defender at his position. Someone said I was way off base. Maybe I am, but apparently David Thorpe doesn't think so. No way he wins DPOY. Same with Asik. They aren't high-profile enough.
From a team the media claimed had gaping holes on defense to this... multiple *bench players in the running for DPOY. Cant wait.
Subjective, sure... but a pretty big step in the right direction, considering how widely panned our defense was last season (albeit fairly).
Who do you think should beat out Doc? I'm actually not too sure what I think about him, but "insiders" seem sooooo high on him that I think he's probably a lock for COY, barring some ridiculous and unforeseen occurrence. Why no Executive of the Year prediction? I want to see a page filled with Dork Elvises.
Super subjective, how was our defense so bad with two, of this year's, DPOY candidates? I understand that Asik could only play so many minutes and Bev came in after the Douglas trade, but even Tyson Chandler was able to elevate the Knicks.
I'm sure they'll both start and not start games this year, thus the asterisk. Just saying. At this point I'm comfortable referring to both as bench players.
