    I got an idea...

How bout we just sign Dwight outright? That seems like a pretty cool option.

whats the point of a sign and trade? I don't understand this can someone explain to me? Doesn't he become a free agent anyways this year?

That article is stretching it and an example of bad sports journalism.
The arguments are poorly thought out.

His argument is that the Rockets would want a sign and trade to clear cap room for another acquisition.

    1) Why don't the rocket sign and trade with the team they are trying to get that 2nd acquisition from? ex. Asik + PF for J.Smith

    2) Why don't the Rockets send White, G.Smith, Jones, T-Rob or whoever they don't really need to the Lakers to clear cap room. Why would they send two valuable assets in Asik and Lin?

The Mavs part of the article at the end is obsolete. It has been reported that the Mavs have given up their pursuit of Chris Paul and intensified their pursuit for Dwight Howard. Mavs learned from inside sources that Chris Paul is very likely to resign with the Clippers.

Absolutely no reason why we would even need to sign & trade for Dwight.

Free up salary for better fitting pieces around a Harden & Howard core.

    That's Tom Ziller's view:

Only reason to do it is if the Rockets can't find a way to clear the additional cap room ($3.5M or so, could be more or less depending on next year's cap numbers) needed to pay Dwight. Lin and Asik are not stars but they are useful players on a team that will be trying to compete for a deep playoff run with the addition of Howard or trade assets that can be exchanges for something. No reason to give them away in a S&T.

To save up enough cap space to sign CPU3 along with D12

    ?

You mean C3PO along with R2D2?

Agree that Lin and Asik would clear the space for Chris Paul. However this scenario seems unlikely as the latest reports say Dallas is giving up chasing CP3 because they learned he is staying in Clipperland (with B.Scott?).

How does DH12 get an extra year in a sign and trade?

The CBA does not allow this anymore. If he is traded, he is limited to 4 years.

Well, there could be a purpose... lets say that CP3 and Howard agreed to join the Rockets. If the Rockets can't find a suitable team to trade roughly 17m. in salary, the Rockets trading Asik and Lin to the Lakers could clear up cap space to get both.

But this falls apart once you realize trading enough salary for even second round picks is better...

    Excellent point.
Why trade for Dwight when you can sign outright and give LA nothing. If we want to clear space for CP3 (very unlikely), we send Lin and Asik to the Clippers. Or better yet, send Lin and Asik for picks (but who would trade picks for Lin and Asik?).

The Lakers sign and trade idea seems like just desperate thinking from Faker Fans trying to come to grips that Dwight can just walk away leaving them in a stinking pile of excrement.

All these Laker fans saying let sign and trade him there instead of letting him walk... They don't realise that LA have NO CONTROL. Dwight has ALL THE POWER to decide what he wants to do.

I've been thinking, the only reason the Rockets would consider a sign and trade with the lakers is to keep more assets, see below.

The way that the Rockets can get Dwight (should the cap room not be fully available) and not give up their current asset stash (T-Rob, TJones, D-Mo, Beverley, Anderson).*Could this option work?*Say Dwight says "I'm going to Houston". Could Morey approach LA and tell them "We can sign Dwight outright OR we could do a sign and trade and you get a 2nd round pick + a nice trade exception". This way the Rockets don't need to drop any assets to a team under the cap for a pick. Sure it costs the Rockets a pick, but it could be worth it to keep T-Rob or TJones and see if they develop. Also, keeping T-Rob could help down the line either getting Josh Smith (T-Rob+Asik) or packaging in another trade.

If Lakers are willing to take Lin + Asik + Robinson (which I suspect they would) they you do it.

It's true that if we want to add another impact player we can trade our assets to them. But it's not easy to find someone to take these players off your hands for nothing. In Lin's case I'm not sure there are many teams who believe in his value as much as the Rockets do. So it's possible we acquire Howard and then get a commitment from Josh Smith, but ATL refuses to accept a sign and trade. You then have to go to the rest of the league and try to find takers for a few contracts.

Makes things complicated. We can sign Howard outright, but with the signing of Howard the roster needs to be re-adjusted.

If we are able to send Lin + Robinson + Asik out, then we can talk about things like:

    - Acquiring Ryan Anderson in exchange for a draft pick.
    - Offering Milsap or Josh Smith the chance to play with Howard/Harden without the need for their respective teams to cooperate in a trade.
    - Long shot, but if we lost all 3 of those guys in the sign and trade, we could try to entice Chris Paul to join Howard/Harden.

The game is flexibility. You have Howard and Harden - if you make the right addition to that core, we could be fighting Miami for a championship from next season.

But again, if we have to just sign Howard I would be ok with that too. I'm fairly confident in Lin and Robinson's trade value, and extremely confident about Omer's.

Yes, we can dream but I think that the Rockets will sign Howard outright first before thinking about moving other assets to make space for a second star. This was backed up by so called "insider" cyberx when he said "Rockets will sign Dwight outright, no plans to move Asik, confident his value will keep, think about trading him when and if the right offers come."

Basically, the Rockets will keep Asik even if Dwight comes (hence the twin towers rumours). Maybe they will consider an Asik trade for KLove or someone they think is worth it if the Twin Towers don't work.

Give the Lakers assets when Dwight is an UNRESTRICTED free agent.

By July 1st, no team owns Dwight Howard. Then why give the Lakers assets for nothing in return if Dwight chooses to sign with us when he's not even a Laker?

If you want to dump salary, then find a deal with other teams. There are a ton of future draft picks available out there that we could get in return. Even 2nd round picks are way better than handing the Lakers free gifts.

Neither the Rockets nor Dwight Howard would gain anything from a S&T with LA. Simple as that.
