Gay, lesbian troops can serve openly -- for now

So I guess "morale in the ranks" only applies during peace time?

outlaw,

You can't complain that they don't allow it, then once they do complain about that too.

Hopefully, this is the direction all of our governmental branches and policies are headed. Maybe recognition of gay marriages is next.

of course, the gay soldiers still don't get to wear the hot pink and lavender camo that they like so much...There's still hope of getting "Gonna Make You Sweat" by C&C Music Factory into the heavy rotation of army radio stations, though, so moral among gay soldiers is still high...

The network said, however, that those who choose to disclose they are gay might face discharge after the conflict is ended, as happened to gay troops after the Gulf War.

"The stop-loss order is an explicit acknowledgment by the Pentagon that gays and lesbians can serve their country, no question about that," Steve Ralls, spokesman for the network, said yesterday. "It also sends the unfortunate message that while there are (gay men and lesbians) who put themselves in harm's way, who risked their lives for the country, they can expect to be fired from their job" once the conflict is over.

Excellent.... "You can die for your country because it helps us out, but we still don't like you here. Once we don't absolutely need you, you're gone."

Maybe Falwell and Robertson convinced Bush that the more gays and lesbians who die in battle the more Christian our nation will become.

Thanks Shanna.

That is absolutely disgusting. I still haven't quite figured out what someone's sexual preference has to do with their duty, their patriotism, or even subliminally on their ability to pull a damn trigger.

Sometime, somehow, this country has got to pull and yank itself into the reality of this world. We work and live alongside people everyday that have different views on life. Some, have sexual lives that are different than ours .... so what .... get on with your life .... let others get on with theirs ....

.... ya know by the time we seperate ourselves from those that don't have the same religion, don't have the same culture, don't have the same shade of skin pigmentation, don't occupy the same economic stratus, or don't argue the same political bend ..... well ... we have pretty much eliminated everyone except maybe some pretty close family members or a couple of "yes men" you've collected along the way .... and, well if you start dividing that small group even further due to thier sexual preference you may not only be surprised by the result ... but, well ... you may be alone.

The military operates under different laws than we do. Do you want to change that? Should corporations start adopting military policy, or vice versa?

Of course my views are conservative, so Im against the whole gay-in-the-army thing.

I find it sickening that they would let them in now, and release them later. Very stupid.

I do agree with the "Don't ask-Don't tell" policy. I agree that you should be able to server your country regardless of your preference. This gives the gay people who can act civilized w/out letting their sexual preferance get in the way play a part in the armed services.

Now while we are slaming the anti-gay people, think about this; Do we not have seperate quarters for men and women? Women do not feel comfortable with men oogling at their bodies, and I personally would not want a guy oogling at my body in the showers.

The people I know that serve in the armed forces are against the whole gay's in the military thing. What I do not understand is why anyone would want to be teammating with someone who finds them repulsive. I for one would not want someone covering my ass if they did not like me or felt I should not be there.

Don't ask, don't tell sickens me. Revoking it only when more troops is needed just adds to the asenineness of the whole military policy towards homosexuals. Maybe they should just create "gay-only" divisions in the Army, so that the rest of the troops don't get contaminated with gayness.

Now the only problem is getting the straight guys who can't act civilized due to their sexual preference out of the army. I recall events such as the Tailhook convention, as well as the exclusion of and discrimination against women at the Citidal, etc.

I think the problem isn't whether someone is gay or straight, it's whether they're a worthless asshole or not. Until the army removes all sexual discrimination I don't think there's a real issue with gay people who may or may not act "civilized".

Someone told me that the US Government is the largest employer of homosexuals nationwide. Pretty interesting (if it's true).

It's pretty interesting that people are afraid of gay people "oogling them" and "checking them out" all the time. If every woman doesn't check a person out, why would a gay person be different?

at least be consistent with their laws you know? their 2 main reasons for banning gays were troop morale and the idea that gays are security risks. well aren't both of those really important right now?

and how can you justify kicking them out after the conflict is over?

Com'on. Now's not the time for the military to discriminate based on sexual orientation. It should discriminate based on socio-economic factors.
