Were Frodo and Sam gay? Maybe this sounds like a dumb question but I have read these books many times and I believe there are some hints and some properties of their friendship that have led me to consider that this was (possibly unintentional) the case.
I like to think that people who actually do think that just have no clue what friends are and are completely confused when they read about such a mysterious concept.
Sam wouldn't have married that thing (elf?) in the bar if he were gay. It would have continued to be Frodo and Sam...and he would have left with Frodo at the end on the boat. They did have a special relationship, though, and liked to touch each other.
I don't know, but they were both wussies. Unfortunate that none of the hobbits died. Instead they killed off that "one does not simply walk into mordor" dude.
The writer, Tolkien, intended for their friendship to mimic the camaraderie and relationship that he saw among men who fought in the trenches during World War 1. In Pakistan, fore instance, some men hold hands in the streets while walking together not because they're homosexual (though some may be), but because it's in their culture the way some sports have athletes hugging one another or slapping each other's asses. I've even seen Iraq veterans who are very loving and touchy with one another. If you look at both Hobbits in the above light, their friendship is just that and nothing more.
I noticed in the European Championship Soccer tourney, during the countries anthem, a lot of them put their arms around each other. Here, we just put our hands over our hearts.
The fact is touching, hugging, all that stuff is at some points in time and some cultures much more accepted and can or could be done without having to worry about someone believing it was homosexual. Obviously now, that's changed, and some folks will take affection between friends to be homosexual no matter how non-sexual it is.
