Yes, that would automatically solve years of illiteracy and anarchy that exists in those areas.

In fact, it might make them automatically democratic.

It would be a great start by getting religion out of the schools.

Just because religion is one of their problems doesn't mean you ignore that it is a problem.

So, you start with one problem and continue fixing the rest, but you got to start fixing one first.

And getting Islam out of the schools and goverment would be a great start.

To do that though you would end up killing a lot more of those people that we are trying to vaccinate against polio.

For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction.

I was watching National Geographic this week about Yellowstone about when America declared wolves a pest and systematically erradicated them. Wolves were reintroduced a few years ago. Interestingly, despite that wolves are feeding on Bison, the Bison population has suddenly exploded in correlation to the growth of wolf packs. Why is that?

If we "take off our PC gloves", there will be some sort of side effect. Sometimes that side effect is worse than the original problem. Unfortunately, you'll never know it until you do it because side effects can't be predicted.

Radical Islam's war on health

Photo credit: AP | A Pakistani health worker gives a polio vaccine to a child in Lahore, Pakistan. Polio remains endemic in Afghanistan, Nigeria and Pakistan. (June 4, 2012)

At the start of the new millennium, the United Nations' health organizations, WHO and UNICEF, were reasonably confident that polio could be eradicated by the end of 2004.
Then came radical Islam, with its suspicions about -- if not downright hatred of -- the United States. Muslim leaders in northern Nigeria announced that they were blocking UN immunizations of children because, they believed, the vaccines were laced with HIV and sterilization chemicals: It was all part of a sinister U.S. plot to reduce the Muslim population.
Whether the villagers believed this nonsense or not was immaterial because the Islamic radicals were prepared to stop the immunizations by force.
The disease spread to southern Nigeria and seven neighboring West African nations, and it has been a slow process to recoup the lost ground.
Now a Pakistani Taliban commander in North Waziristan has banned a polio-inoculation program just days before 161,000 children under age 5 were to be vaccinated. If this ban stands, it is a heartbreaking setback in the drive to eliminate the disease.
The commander, Hafiz Gul Bahadur, said he would allow the program to go forward if the United States stops all drone strikes. In a way, holding the children hostage to this crippling disease is a backhanded compliment: It suggests that the United States is too humane to allow this to happen and that we care more about Pakistan's children than Taliban leaders do.
According to The New York Times, Pakistan accounted for 198 new cases of polio last year, the highest rate in the world. The disease is now endemic in just three countries: Pakistan, Afghanistan and Nigeria.
The sad thing about this mujahedeen meddling is that health workers were beginning to make real progress, 22 new cases reported in Pakistan so far this year compared with 52 this time last year.
It would speak very poorly of Pakistan if its government stood by while this crippling but easily preventable disease spread through the children of its northern tribes.

No, Im sorry that is the problem. Religious leaders run everything over there. EVERYTHING. They tell villagers we are there to destroy Islam. That is how they recruit new fighters.

Lack of education is an issue, but religion is the problem.

I think poverty is the bigger problem. Hey you don't have anything and if some guy promises you paradise and 50 virgins and you have nothing not even a goat to bang well that guys promises whether real or not might sound kind of appealing.

That is why the richer the country the less religious they are.

Saudi Arabia? UAE?

They are pretty rich, but still, they have very backward laws and customs.

Poverty and lack of education are a huge problem, but - it's the religion. All three of these factors work together, too.

No. I had discussions with many Afghans, from villagers to truck drivers to soldiers. They dont want any of the things we have because it is against their religion.

I tried to show them things like Ipods, Laptop computers. They dont want it. They are happy with what they have, as long as they are left alone.

It doesn't matter what is BIGGER, you have to start somewhere - or start working on multiple problems.

Teaching Islam in schools is a problem, let folks decide when they are older what they want to believe, it is pure brainwashing to teach kids there is only one way to worship, it is just not true, nor healthy.

Why not just get with China, Russia and Europe and roll into Saudi Arabia, take over their oil fields, for the worlds good, kick out their Kings, and start a program of educating and spreading the wealth among the citizens instead of the ruling class.

Probably never happen though...
