Context is anything but irrelevant.

Quit acting like Antonio Smith dropped a turd in the shape of a Super Bowl ring and has been wiping it across the faces of our AFC opponents.

The Texans pay him. The franchise requires these guys to be available to the media and do interviews. Everything that comes out of his mouth is his opinion. That could have been Nick Scurfield of houstontexans.com asking that question. You're basically saying they should stop doing interviews and have their play on the field answer all of these questions, even though its June and that would leave several months of dead space.

Not to me. The point is to not talk about the Super Bowl, asked or offered. If they ask, redirect. No need to get ahead of yourself. There are 18-19 games (and 8 months) between now and the Super Bowl.

What?!!.... This changes everything!

That's actually my point: ESPN pays people for nonsense opinions about games that will happen in 8 months. The Texans pay Antonio Smith to work hard, take his game to the next level, etc.. etc.

Wha? I've now twice posted what I think would have been perfectly acceptable answers. (Again this is just *my* personal preference.) There are a million (IMO) acceptable answers that don't invoke the Super Bowl.

So, no.... that's basically the exact opposite of what I'm saying.

But like I said, they require these guys to meet and answer questions from the media that's part of being a professional athlete and a Houston Texan so in a sense they do also pay for his opinion. If he has to sit there and answer questions like "going into next year after the success you guys had last season, what would be an acceptable outcome for 2012-2013?", ones that are lobbed up for Super Bowl related answers from guys like Nick Scurfield of houstontexans.com (another Houston Texan employee) then that's what you'll get. If they didn't want to hear his opinion on questions like that, they would stop putting mics in front of his face and especially ones that are being held by people that work for the same franchise.

I think the way he handled it was perfect. He answered by stating what the goal is they are working, something Bob McNair has made very public, without making any predictions. They aren't pulling a Rex Ryan or a Lebron James predicting they would win the championship, they are just stating obvious goals, ones that are shared by every other team in the league. Just because he used the words "Super Bowl" in his answer doesn't turn me off the way it does to you especially not to the point where I would be "physically ill". So in the hilarious words of Rocketman95...

Its not like he said they are already preparing the parade (like Rex Ryan) after the super bowl win.
he said his goal is the superbowl not the playoffs.

last year you couldnt say the goal is the superbowl when you havent got into the playoffs first, now that you have already won a playoff game, then you can talk about the super bowl, and also is not like a team like St. Louis, Seattle, Carolina, etc.

Cam Newton, last year at the Pro Bowl, said that this year wants to be in the Super Bowl instead of the Pro Bowl.

And I dont find anything wrong with that comment, he is saying that his goal is the super bowl. just like Antonio Smith.

So the Texans won the AFC south which is a joke of a division without Manning and beat the Bungles in the playoffs. Now were talking Superbowl? Good luck with that.

uhhh...they also lost a fairly close game with a 5th round rookie QB throwing 3 INTs while on the road that would have put them in the Conference championship game.

0-3 vs the Ravens the last 2 years.

We have to beat them this year esp without TSizzle playing.

You have a point .

This year will be a true test .

I'll tell you this if we go 3-1(packers) in the NFC North we will be true Super Bowl Contenders.

So a member of the Houston Texans says that he won't accept anything short of the Super Bowl, and a "Texans Fan" has a problem with that?

Setting realistic goals should always be encouraged.

It was all about making the playoffs last season. The Texans have a different goal in mind this season and rightfully so.
This.

It isn't as though we're a new franchise, and one of our rookies is saying we're setting our sights on the SB.

I know this is a Texans / Rockets board, but I honestly believe Houston is the best AFC team right now, if everyone remained healthy. This year's AFC spot in the SB is ours to lose.

Giants were 10-6 and didn't make the playoffs in 2010. Won Super bowl in 2011

Packers were 11-5 and lost in a wild card game in 2009. Won Super bowl in 2010

Saints went 8-8 and didn't make the playoffs in 2008. Won Super Bowl in 2009.

Your argument has no merit.

You're grasping for straws. We all know perfectly well that that the Texans are perfectly capable of beating the Packers, Saints, and Giants.

I'm not saying we're SB favorites, but we're definitely considered one of the big boys now.

Your position is the Texans don't have a good enough QB to win a Super Bowl. That's reasonable position that has nothing to do with rocketballin's contention or my retort.

You've got to be kidding me?! The AFC is nowhere as competitive as the NFC. I agree the Texans will win the division. Who can't win that division? But win a Superbowl? I've never seen someone so out of touch with reality. Give it a couple of years.

We lost to the Colts. Big boys my ass.

Yea Drew Brees enjoyed the loss we put on him last season...oh wait!

I've watched a lot of football in my lifetime. One thing I know is you have to win on the field.

Your retort is correct. However, the QBs I mentioned are the reason your retort is valid.

The first year the Texans get to the playoffs in their history and now were talking Superbowl? I'm just saying a lot of you guys really jump the gun. No way the Texans can keep up with Green Bay. Rogers would put a clinic on the Texans defense like he did against every other team last year.
