macalu, I got on almost all the rides, saw lots of shows, etc. I didn't stand in long lines (used FastPass for the rides that allowed it and you would do that at any other theme park, anyway), I didn't pay an exorbitant amount of money to fly there (I drove, spent considerably less on gas), and didn't "just walk around in a fantasy land."
read his posts again.

And it is a status thing. The marketing hype tells Americans that they must take their families to a Disney park before their kids grow up. That if they do not they are somehow missing out.

I disagree. I can think of many more rewarding places to take a family than to go to that hellish manicured hole that specializes in pushing tons of useless and wasteful plastic mouse-eared crap to tourists.

Disneyland is great.

it's about the overall experience, not the thrill rides. It's cleaner, and for me it's about the architecture of the park itself. the way everything is designed is part of the experience. the landscaping, the sightlines, the underground world beneath the rides.
everything has been "imagineered" to fit together. the rides themselves are unique and old school. a few good thrill rides like Space Mountain and Matterhorn make up for the lack of "real" rollercoasters.

and as as far as money goes, I have always believed it to be the better of the options vs. Six Flags. Six Flags is more of an inherent money grab, even with the Disney prices going up recently.

the Fast Pass at Disney is free vs a $100 Flash Pass to cut in line. you DON'T have to buy stuff, you know?

foodwise and to the topic of this thread, I always pack a picnic lunch, totally allowed at Disney. at Six FLags you are lucky if you can stay under $20 on food items in a day. hell, they have a $20 free refill souvenir cup just to keep you filling up your soda all damn day long.

but overall it's a much more family friendly experience at Disney. I don't see all the hate and so called "social status" hoopla.

my wife and I went to Disneyworld in Orlando back in '07 and have made it a yearly tradition to go to Disneyland in Anaheim around Valentine's Day. it's a nice time. in Southern California, there are discounts for local residents and we manage to make it out there without spending an arm and a leg. we still have to get our junk food so I don't see them taking away all the treats at the park like ice cream and cotton candy, etc...

bobrek, it was before, but I was kidding then. Of course I don't go there "as a social status thing"... my girls just love it, and so do the Mrs. and I. If we can afford it, we go. We have a Fiesta Texas season pass right now. We go to Disney almost every 4 years for the character and "fantasy land" experience.

Knott's Berry Farm is where it's at. Incredibly cheap annual passes and is never as busy as Disneyland (yeah I know that's apples and oranges).

I like the bit about curtailing the junk food ads on the tv programs. What they serve in the park is no big deal as long as there are healthy options too.

I don't really get the Disney hate. I haven't been to Disneyworld in several decades but I remember LOVING it as a kid.

We are going to the Disney resort in Vero Beach next month like we do every 3 years and I can't wait. Everything they do is first class. From what I understand, the cruises are the same way.

I personally don't see the point in depriving my kids of a fun week just so I can wage my one-man RAGE AGAINST THE ESTABLISHMENT, but to each his own I guess.

i was just curious about it. like i said, i probably can't relate because i don't have kids and never cared for Disney as a child. as an outsider, there doesn't seem like much to do.

To each his own, indeed. What you see as depriving a kid of a fun week I see as providing a fun week for my child in what I consider a more enriching environment. Real mountains over fake mountains. Real magic instead of fake magic.

But please do not be concerned. I'm positive my "one-man rage against the establishment" will do little to impact the amount of plastic Disney sends into the oceans.

Its not hard to see why you dont relate, you dont have kids and didnt enjoy it as a kid. Don't need to defend yourself, we dont have to all like what each other likes.

I personally have been a couple of times, and my daughter cherishes the trip we took to Disney. That is reason enough for me to go even tho I do find it over-priced and somewhat boring. My girl enjoyed it and that is all that matters.

As far as the social status thing, it may be to younger children, but any suggestions that adults consider it a status symbol to go is just you believing the Disney commercial strategy.

btw....Universal Studios was right down the street, and is more aimed at older kids and adults. We split our time in Orlando between Disney and Universal....everyone was happy.

i have a universal studios pass - pretty cheap it has a few blackout dates but not like the other places only a few rides but its rarely crowded i go after work for like 2 hours and can easily get on all the rides including the new Transformers ride.

Knotts is a bit further for me I havent been there in several years may be worth checking out again I dont recall the last time they had a new ride or anything open up. I think the last time I was there Silver Bullet just opened.

I wholeheartedly agree with you. Our opinion isnt going to have many supporters and probably will bring haters out of the woodworks as they try and defend their childhood idol Disney. They've just been brainwashed too!

because somebody likes something you don't, doesn't mean they've been brainwashed. It's fine, if you don't like Disney. It's fine if other people do like Disney.

Liking Disney doesn't mean someone's a sheep, and just following the crowd.

All that might be true, but he was saying his reasons for not liking Disney and why it's expensive, when it's NOT like that most of the time, at least while I've gone.

Some people (not you macalu, I mean some that have that opinion before you, and have gone), just don't research how to save money or just how to have a better time, then hate it and tell people about it. There are great ways to save and spend a good time.

We're back to the discussion of food, though... I don't see how the junk food is so bad, though.

Disney's probably one of the more divisive places to go to. People either love it (like my family and myself) or hate it.

I think part of it is relative to how old you are when you go. I was 7 on my first trip. I don't know about Disneyland, but disneyworld is huge. Takes up a whole county, and is nearly cut off from the outside world. For all intents and purposes, it's almost like being on an island. For that one week, I can ignore the real world and be naive and innocent again.
