In the 2001/2002 season FC St. Pauli again failed to maintain its position in the top league. Even the Bundesliga's second division proved a slippery slope, so that St.Pauli shortly plummeted into the Regional League North. In both sporting and financial terms, the club had hit an all-time low. The campaign that followed was perhaps a unique happening in the whole history of German football. St.Pauli's fans got together and demonstrated, throughout Germany, in support of the 'Save St.Pauli Campaign'. 'Save St.Pauli' T-shirts were printed (they are still for sale at St.Pauli's fan shop today), the slogan 'Drink for St. Pauli' was commonly heard on the Reeperbahn and – wait for it – FC Bayern München gave itself the honour of another match, in a friendly game against FC St.Pauli played at the Millerntor stadium. Before the start of the game Uli Hoeness ran around the pitch wearing a Save St.Pauli T-shirt, and never had the stadium resounded to such tumultuous applause.
