I wanted to start a thread on one of my biggest hobbies: collecting and listening to music. I have over 300 CDs, and I like a little bit of everything. However, my favorite styles are techno/electronica and hard rock/alt rock. Some of my favorite CDs include Radiohead's OK Computer, The Bends, and Kid A, Moby's Play and Everything Is Wrong, Orbital's Orbital 2 or Brown Album, Smashing Pumpkins's Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness, and Dido's No Angel. There are many more, but this is just a sampler. If I lived in a bigger city like Nashville or Houston, I would probably try to get a job in the music industry reviewing CDs for music magazines like SPIN or Rolling Stone. So, what types of music do people here like? What types do people here dislike? Let me know and I apologize if this topic is something that has been talked about before.

I don't really listen to widespread types, mainly just follow certain groups. 311, Rage, Go-Go's, Jane Wiedlin, Beastie Boys, Incubus, No Doubt, Pink Floyd, Corrs.

I listen to just about everything except country.
I'm really in to 'down-tempo' type electronica... but none of that screw music... (too slow)
I also enjoy britrock and britpop

Current faves:
Tricky - Blowback
Perry Farrell - Song yet to be sung
Alpha - Impossible Thrill
CAST
Doves
etc, etc....

Like you guys, I listen to a wide array of music.

I usually lean towards the rock n' roll side, but I do enjoy R&B, as well as some hip hop. No country for me please.

I don't know how old you guys are, but my absolute, hands down, favorite band in the entire world is Guns N' Roses. Axl Rose is the ultimate front man. Slash, damn, he's simply amazing.

Yes, Axl is the only original member left, and it is still called Guns N' Roses. I did see Slash a few months ago when he came to town. Awesome as usual.

But the all time greatest rock album is Appetite for Destruction.

We're all sick of this boy band/pop explosion. When Axl and company finally release their long-awaited album, Chinese Democracy, we'll finally see a change.

I've heard a few songs from this new album, and it's awesome. A mix of Led Zepplin and Pink Floyd if you will. There's also some electronica influences.

It's good to see another Chemical Brothers fan as well as Radiohead. Elvis -- what Chemical Brothers CD(s) do you have? I have Dig Your Own Hole and just got from Amazon today, Exit Planet Dust. I haven't listened to it yet, but I will before the weekend is over.

For the past year or so, I have really started to shun mainstream music. Most of what I listen to now is:

- celtic music
- japanese orchestral/symphonic
- traditional asian & egyptian
- vg arranged soundtracks

Man, if I listed all the bands/artists I liked, this board would run out of memory.

As a kid, I listened to what my mom listened to - Beatles, Rod Stewart, Mowtown, Atlantic R&B, Stax and folk music of the 70's (James Taylor, Cat Stevens, etc)

As a teen, I listened mainly to hard rock - KISS, Van Halen, Aerosmith, Rush, etc.

Towards the end of high school, I began to listen to more progressive rock and instrumental rock & guitar stuff - Yes, Kansas, Al Di Meola, Steve Morse, Joe Satriani, Yngwie Malmsteen, etc

Early on in college, I re-discovered the Beatles, Mowtown, Atlantic R&B and other music of my youth. I also learned about Sting (a life-changer when I saw Bring On the Night - the first time I saw a band ROCK with no heavy guitars), Bob Dylan, the Rolling Stones, blues music and the early remnants of jazz and new age music - George Winston, Chick Corea, Stanley Clarke, Jaco Pastorius, Mike Stern, John Scofield, etc.

Soon after, I started listening to hard rock again but also began listening to pop and more jazz - XTC, Tears for Fears, Whitesnake, Jellyfish, It Bites (cool band), Queensryche, Mark Whitfield, etc. I also started listening to funk like P Funk, Brothers Johnson, Tower of Power and others.

After that, I discovered real jazz - Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Charlie Parker, Winton Marsalis, Oscar Peterson, Milt Jackson and on and on and on. Lately, that's all I've been listening to.

I also picked up on a lot of stuff my wife liked/es - Joni Mitchell, Indigo Girls, Chris Whitley, Suzanne Vega, Steely Dan, Supertramp, jazz (she's primarily responsible for my love of jazz), Jobim, classical and many others.

Soon after, I started playing with a Latin band and I began to listen to Latin music, Brazillian, African, Afro Cuban and other world music. At the same time, I was listening to pop music like Seal.

Since then, I've listened to pretty much everything I could get my hands on with the exception of country (except the older stuff which I still think is kinda cool). I am in the infant stages of learning about rap and hip hop and I've been digging on industrial music for a while now. I am also learning about string arrangements and chamber music.

Basically, I like stuff with great grooves, killer hooks and cool music. If it has any combination of those three, even better!

I am an obsessive Chemical Brothers fan. You should love "Exit Planet Dust." I have all of their cds, mix cds, singles (or close to all of them) and imports. I downloaded a couple of cool songs that are scheduled to be released on their next cd and things bode well for the future. I am currently loving the song that was on the Tomb Rider soundtrack, "Galaxy Bounce" and much of "Surrender." My fiancee (wife in two months..yikes!) and I saw them in Austin a few years ago and we jumped around like mad for hours (with a little help, of course ; ).
