What is his eventual ceiling? Career backup? Eventual replacement for Schaub? Is he still third string? If not, who is?

I know this is something of a cop-out answer, but I think it remains to be seen how good he can be.

If I had to guess, I would say that he is not going to be someone that will be able to replace Schaub, but he will be a guy that can step in and win some games in a pinch.

He'll either be a nice guy to have as a backup or he'll be someone the Texans can flip to a team desperate for a QB.

Unless he defies some serious odds, he's a career backup. Hopefully a good one.

He's taking way too much flak today. He's a 5th rounder that wasn't supposed to see any action outside the practice squad this season. Leading a comeback against a top three defense, on the road, in the playoffs, with only one worthwhile receiver? He didn't cough up a lead throwing picks, he pressed and made bad decisions trying to make something happen (with nothing there).

I wouldn't give up on him, but he needs to step back and develop behind Schaub.

Very, very solid backup for a long time IMO. Might eventually get a shot to start somewhere if he gets more opportunities like he did this year.

this. he obviously didn't go tom brady like everyone hoped but he did a remarkably good job considering all the setbacks this team has had. he's clearly earned the backup role behind schaub and i think the texans hold on to him to see whether he can end up replacing schaub once schaub's game starts to take a clear dip. but i think schaub's sheer experience and familiarity with our playbook means he gives us the best shot of winning on any given game.

Best case, a low, middle of the pack starter. More likely a solid backup. I don't think he'll be as good as Schaub is, a borderline top 10 QB. The talk of benching Schaub for him was silly.

He can be great and can be Schaub- like with more mobility once he learns to make better decisions. He has a great arm and makes good passes. This was a good learning experience for him

probably, he will never play again and we can trade him for something in a year or two. kind of like how we acquired schaub.

He'll never be a full time starter. He can be a good backup possibly, but nothing more.

Impossible to say sample size is very small and if all goes right next year he will not take a snap next year...

When people were calling for Schaub's head after the Cincy win in the regular season, I thought the overreaction was absurd.

So now that Yates looked bad to end the season, I want to say he's still developing well. If you look at it from an objective standpoint, this is Yates' 8th game, or 1/2 way through a rookie season. Who doesn't have horrible games at that point? Whether Yates will eventually be starting material will depend on how he learns to read defenses in the future. But righ now there's nothing to suggest he can't be any less than Schaub in the long term

this article (written last May) says he's more likely to be the next Tom Brady than a complete failure

http://bleacherreport.com/articles/6...houston-texans

I wonder if the author still feels the same after his performance today

Wow, I think most people are downplaying him. He's a rookie. He's very confident. He has the potential to be the starter. I think he will be a great investment.

He'll be the 2nd string QB after Schaub for 2012 and forward. Leinart will be cut due to his salary

well, a lot of Schaub haters got what they wanted...a QB with a "better arm" and more mobility. I guess decision making isn't important to them. Ironically, those same Schaub haters are saying we would have been Super Bowl contenders if he didn't get hurt.

Give him at least another year or two watching schaub and he can be on his way to a starter. He was thrown into a very bad situation this year and you can't fault him for the mistakes he made. He is a rookie that was never supposed to start in the first place.
