One of my hopes when Kevin McHale came in as coach was that he'd teach Scola some basic American post skills: boxing-out, back to the basket, defense etc. Hill's had massive improvement under him. I don't want to believe Scola's too old to learn these things.
Scola does all those things very well, but there is only so much you can do defensively when you have the lateral quickness of an average Clutchfans member... Spoiler
I don't think lateral quickness is so much his problem as leaping ability. He just can't jump like, e.g., Landry or so. I think that's also why he blocks very few shots. On the other hand, his game depends a lot less on athleticism than on finesse and smarts, which is why I think he can still produce at the same level for several years.
I think it is more likely that he goes Kurt Thomas on us and is effective for a good 8 more years... He has very few NBA miles on him...
Its so unfair on Scola to try and guard Howard and Bynum. Yeah we score good in offense with a small lineup but i defense opposition teams with beasting 7 footers will always beast on us. Playing small doesnt work. No one has won a championship playing small.
