Last week, I was in a mini-car accident with some friends. I don't know how my rib was hit, but somehow, within the last few days, it has become increasingly painful. It is excruciating if/when I sneeze or take deep breaths, along with laying on my side. Any type of pressure is awful.

However, when I look at my ribs, there is no obvious bruising or swelling.

The pain goes from one side of my rib cage to my back.

I Googled symptoms and treatment for bruised and broken ribs, and it seems like the only thing to treat them with is time and rest.

Any other remedies out there? I know I can go to the doctor and get some pain pills, but I'd rather not.

Thanks in advance!

You should go to a doctor, depending on the type of fracture it may not heal on its own and you also don't want to damage any intercostal nerves or vessels. Go get an xray.

Xray, you don't want them to pierce a lung.

really? It can be that serious? I've tried to downplay it to pulling a muscle, but I doubt it. I just sneezed and felt something kind of "buckle."

You have 3 muscles in between each rib, mixed in those are an artery, vein and nerve. The vessels don't carry much blood but you still don't want them damaged, the biggest thing to worry about is the nerve which may explain the refered pain to your back.

You need an xray to rule out a hemothorax (blood in the thoracic cavity). It probably is just a broken rib like you stated, but you should make sure.

Alright, you all bring up good points. I guess I will take my sorry ass to the doctor.

I was trying to avoid it though. Teachers don't get many paid days off anymore in Phoenix.
