Quote:
One of President Barack Obama's Harvard professors has condemned the Defense Department's treatment of suspected WikiLeaks source Pfc. Bradley Manning, as the Obama administration has denied access to Manning by the United Nations Special Rapporteur on Torture, Juan Mendez.

Among the nearly 300 constitutional scholar signatories condemning the federal government holding Manning in isolation since July is Lawrence Tribe, one of Obama's Harvard Law School professors.

The constitutional scholars argued that Manning’s treatment "violates his person and his liberty without due process of law and in the way it administers cruel and unusual punishment of a sort that cannot be constitutionally inflicted even upon someone convicted of terrible offenses, not to mention someone merely accused of such offenses." The group complained that Manning is kept in solitary confinement under a "Prevention of Injury" regulation that has required forced nudity before male and female guards, procedures that the Obama administration has refused to explain publicly. The constitutional scholars concluded: "In an Orwellian twist, the spokesman for the brig commander refused to explain the forced nudity 'because to discuss the details would be a violation of Manning’s privacy.'"

Shame on the DoJ. What a disgrace. This was the kind of thing I'd hope we were moving away from.

Is anyone surprised that this happened? The DOD doesn't care about the Constitution and they know no one else cares enough to do anything about it.

Nope. If he wants to commit suicide, let him. He's still a traitor.

candidate obama also said whistleblowers should be protected, but president obama thinks we should torture them.

He released information that was not his to disseminate, that happened to be classified. No one denies that. By definition that makes him a traitor as the result of his actions gave useful information to our enemies.

I don't approve of the unconstitutional measures being taken during his confinement. But I can regard him a traitor and a disgrace. Those who want to make him a hero, go ahead. The same Constitution says we can all have our own opinions.

He's just fulfilling Obama's promise for more transparency. Isn't that what he said? It's something I hoped for...

I didn't say you couldn't have your own opinion. That said what he is dealing with is essentially extra judicial punishment based off of a cover of providing for his safety. That in principle violates his rights and until he is tried and convicted by something other than your opinion he has those rights.
