6 posts and no Devry joke? (EDIT: got it on the 8th!)

Do you mean actually producing, or do you mean just working in film? A producer can have a lot of roles, but is generally a general manager of a project -- planning, scripting, budgeting, hiring are all involved. You also have business only managers, typically called executive producers, that don't work on the creative side at all and in a lot of cases just put up money expecting a bigger return later.

You can't really go to school and just become a movie producer (unless you're talking about small projects that you want to submit to film festivals). You can go to film school, and if you end up being good at it and get some breaks and actually make it, you can work for a long time (through a combination of writing, asst. directing, directing, possibly even acting) to build up a strong reputation. Once you have that, and in most cases a lot of money to help finance projects, you might get an opportunity to produce something.

I would venture to guess that most movie producers didn't set out to become producers. They were just successful in different film roles, are business savvy, and got the right breaks. It's kind of like setting out to become an NBA GM -- there's not really a direct path for that.

producers are mainly just the funding. sure they choose who/what to spend their money on but they really dont do much beyond that.

If that doesn't work out, you can go to plan B: Batman.

    1. Why?
    2. not to be mean but . . .Do you know what Producers do?

He shepherds the production from start to finish. In a typical arrangement, the producer develops an idea or script with a writer and secures the necessary rights. He often hires the director, supervises casting, and assembles a crew. Additionally, the producer oversees the budget and then coordinates the postproduction work—everything from editing, to commissioning music, to encouraging the film's stars to plug the movie on talk shows.

This sounds like a pretty meaty job. I don't think any one degree will prepare you for it. Alot of it maybe . . .jumping in and getting ya feet wet.

If you have the next KILLER Script or Book.
Seems like you can leverage that into producing a film.
Sounds alot like a Corporate Manager.

    More Organizing and logistics.

money, good contacts, common sense, project management skills, and a grasp of financial investing concepts. in other words, nothing a degree will guarantee, but all things you can learn from business courses.

A producer? What happened to the Sportswriter thing? Why not try and be an astronaut, a baseball player, or a brain surgeon? :p

Seriously though...don't give up on things too fast. If you want to be anything that's worth being, it's going to take a lot of time and effort.

I believe the Producer is an employee of the Production Company.

    The Producer

The movie producer's job does not have a clear set of responsibilities, which is why there is no formal training for being a film producer. Usually, however, a producer acquires an idea for a movie and proceeds to find financial backing for it, usually from big movie studios. The producer initiates the beginning of the filmmaking process, guides the film production from conceptualization to promotion and handles all business-related functions that are essential to the movie. The producer may be seen is the supervisor of a film project, but the leader of the project is the director.
