I started shaving my head back in the summer. I do it completely bald with clippers then a razor. My problem is that 9 out of the 10 times I shave it, I end up with irritated, broken out skin but it is just on the back of my head and nowhere else. Here are remedies I have already tried:

    Using new razors every time
    Using different razors
    Switching shaving creams/gels
    Using aftershaves/creams/lotions
Soaking my head in hot water/rags before starting
Using shave oils that are supposed to lessen irritation

None of those things seem to work and I usually still get irritation. I'm thinking it may be that I do not shave it regularly enough and my head doesn't get used to it. I currently let it grow out and do it about 1-2 times per month but I use clippers to shave it down so it is a smooth cut and not pulling the hair out.

Anybody who shave their head regularly have any suggestions?

Why shave it completely than, just leave it as is after you've used the clippers, since you let it grow back out afterwards.

I'm going bald so I really need to get in the tune of shaving it completely off anyway, especially to let my skin color there catch up with the rest of my body. lol I'm just lazy but if somebody who shaves their head regularly suggests that that may be a problem, I'll become more proactive.

I get this along my jawline if I'm not careful. Ingrown hair sucks.

    Shaving folliculitus treatments

What is razor burn folliculitis? Razor-burn folliculitis is very common on women's legs and is caused by shaving. It may also be seen on the faces and necks of men. Typically, repeated tiny cuts caused by the razor on the skin often create small openings. The minute openings may then allow bacteria to enter the skin and invade the deeper hair follicles. Additionally, excessively close shaving may cause trapping of small hairs beneath the skin surface, causing more inflammation.

Treatment involves stopping shaving with a razor for a few days to a few weeks and using antibacterial washes and topical antibiotics. Additional treatments include laser hair removal, electrolysis, electric razors, or cream depilatories like Neet or Nair.

I used to shave my head every other day if not everyday for almost 8 years. I just recently grew it out before i get older and couldn't grow my hair anymore. I will soon shave it again, but not sure when.

When I had this problem back in the day, where there is irritation with bumpy skin and small red dots, I would change the direction I would shave the hair. For example in your case, its in the back of you head. I know when I shaved the back of my head I would go against the way it was growing. So my hair grows down in the back I would shave up.

My case is a little different than yours, i got irritation on the side of my head. Instead of shaving against the hair growth, I would shave from the side of the hair growth. So since hair typically grown down I would get it from the side of the direction that the hair is growing. I sometimes shaved it in the same direction the hair is growing. After I would put regular mild lotion on my head, like Cetaphil or something to that nature. Aftershave doesn't work on the head bc its more sensitive.

    Hope this helps.

If you DON'T shave, do you still get the irritations, imperfections, etc.?

Have you tried using steaming hot water (as hot as you can stand it) before shaving? That might help to not irritate the pores.

I guess the trade off is "looking bald" instead of looking shaved, huh? :(

Try going to a traditional barber and have them shave it for you properly. Its worth a try.

Using good razors are a good idea too not like the cheap disposable ones like the proglide or Mach 3 ones you can reuse those too just sterilize them after your done. Using better razors means less friction and less plucking of your hair maybe that's what's causing the irritation on your head.

I came back into this thread to suggest just this. I know you may not want to pay a barber to shave your head for you, but If it you don't have a problem after the barber gets done, at least you will know its possible.

This goes back to what I posted- a lot of 'irritation' is actually infected cuts/pores. Alcohol after shave or neosporin would help a lot.

I've been shaving my head for about 10 years now. I'll skip a couple of days before shaving again. I sometimes get irritation on the back of my head but I always try to shave at night. I find if I start sweating after shaving it really gets bad. I also have been using a Mach 3 and Gillette gel. Also run cold water over your melon after your done. :)
