I didn't get to *see* the game, but I listened to the first half on KPRC Talk Radio (had to be up by 4, so I decided to pass on the 2nd half and just wait for the Chronicle to tell me the "rest of the story").

The Comets really seemed out of sync. Coop missed 10 of her first 12 shots. And, from the broadcast, it seemed like everyone was settling for the outside shot. If it weren't for Tina Thompson actually hitting some of her outside shots, Janeth Arcain again rebounding well, and Sheryl making some pretty cool defensive stops, I just don't know how bad it could have turned.

It seems to me that the Comets were either still tired from Monday's game (not a good sign if that's the truth) or that they underestimated the Fire because they're an expansion team.

And although I'm glad they managed to win the game, I *really* wish they had been able to close it out in regulation time as they have to turn around and play Seattle tonight.

I think, for this team to seriously improve, our post play is going to HAVE to get better. The big players for the Fire (Burras, for example), seemed to be having a pretty easy time down on the blocks. And it's only going to get worse when we face the likes of Yolanda Griffith and Natalie Williams and even Lisa Leslie.

I would have liked to see Tammy Jackson play (she might have in the 2nd half, I'm not sure, but she didn't play in the first half). TJ played really well against the Liberty and it just seemed to me that Mo Lamb and Tiffani Johnson (little TJ?) just weren't getting the job done. It might even be worth putting Tiffani on IR so that we could see Chakirova play some.

Anyway... I hope they will come in more mentally prepared (their bodies will be tired regardless) for tonight's game!

Just my thoughts....

Yeah. It wasn't pretty, but a win's a win. We struggled against Orlando last year when they opened up as a new franchise. We barely one that game too. So it didn't surprise me that on opening day Portland came with some fire and gave us a run. I don't think the Comets will be tired tonight because they know how poorly they played last night, and rarely do Swoopes and Cooper play bad games back to back. I think we will come to play and win big.

Tiffany Johnson played better than Lamb and grabbed 9 boards in 26 minutes. We only had 7 Turnovers which was really good, but on the bad side of things Cooper is basically playing point guard. And we can't have that. She needs her rest so that she can score and shoot a high percentage. Her low percentage was due to tired legs and trying to shoot 11 threes with those same legs. Arcain played well, really well, but she needs to try and create a little offense for others. Like a true point guard. Maybe she just needs to get back into it. Tammy Jackson didn't see the light of day.

We kicked but at the free throw line again. Going 19-20. Sweet.

One Big problem was fouls. We gave up 28 FT attempts and also Cooper and Swoopes had 5 fouls each. ugly.
