[CHRONIC] Rockets got better this off-season, but is there still work to do?

    Dick Justice to the rescue....

The Rockets didn't get the guy they most wanted, and it's tough to project how all the new pieces fit together. Daryl Morey has made huge changes in a short amount of time.

Only Yao Ming, Shane Battier, Aaron Brooks and Chuck Hayes were around for the start of training camp just two years ago. Yao, Kevin Martin, Brad Miller, Jordan Hill and Patrick Patterson weren't on the roster at the beginning of the 2009 season. (Speaking of Patterson, he's moonlighting as a sportswriter, and I'm guessing he'll tell you it's harder than anything he has ever done.)

Three of them—Yao, Martin and Miller—will be in Rick Adelman's rotation, and the other two could get significant minutes. Adelman will have all kinds of lineup options.

He loved having Kyle Lowry and Brooks on the floor together last season, and if the defense around the basket is improved, they might be the most entertaining duo on the roster.

Their concern remains Yao's health. They'll be very cautious with his minutes, at least at the beginning of the season and perhaps the entire way. At this point, they simply don't know what he's capable of contributing. That's where Miller, Hill and Patterson figure into the mix because they're all capable of playing the low post.

Trevor Ariza is an interesting guy to watch. The Rockets were disappointed that he allowed his shooting issues to negatively impact his defense. Coaches told him again and again he's capable of contributing without scoring, but he had trouble adjusting to that thought.

Word is that he's working hard this off-season, and Adelman will have tough decisions regarding minutes. His starting lineup likely will be Brooks, Martin, Ariza, Scola and Yao. At times last season, his second unit outplayed his first. This season, that second unit might be Lowry, Buddinger, Patterson, Battier and Miller

What about Hill? He has been moved exclusively to center, and there could be time for him there depending on how Yao is doing.

These are good problems to have. The Rockets would love to have had Chris Bosh, but they didn't compound the problem by making a dumb deal. Morey probably would like to make another move during the season to add an impact player if possible, and also to get the Rockets under the luxury tax threshold.

In the end, though, it was depends on Yao. They've got some nice pieces around him, but he's the guy that could elevate the Rockets from a borderline playoff team into a second-round club.

Trading Hill AND Bud wouldn't get the Rockets under the luxury tax. The Rockets intend to pay the tax this year.

i like what morey was able to do this FA without getting the guy they wanted. Miller will get a lot of PT is year and i feel confident that he can play well in his role. looking forward to seeing the rest of the guys step up.

I understand he goes on to talk about all of the guys we added at the trade deadline last season - but we basically know how they fit. The only new pieces as of now are Brad Miller and Patrick Patterson - our back up center and our rookie power forward who may not even see the floor. Really? Not to mention it isn't that difficult to imagine how Miller will fit in. He's played in Adelman's system before and obviously we know what his position is and what we need him to do.

Is there more work to do? No, it never takes much work to win the championship.

During crunch time, i can see Adelman putting this line up in:

    Lowry
    Ariza
    Battier
    Scola
    Yao

That is pretty good perimeter defense. Ariza definitely better shooter than Artest.
