hanging with the family yesterday, an impromptu afternoon outing after my wife's flight to Chicago had been cancelled. weather was raw, kids were cranky, but we needed to get out of the house, so we got lunch, then decided to buy the kids shoes.

walked into the store and was accosted (really no other word for it) by a rather crotchety old dude who "helped" us find a couple pairs, then disappeared to the stock room to find their sizes. he was gone a long time, but we got the shoes, and he took me to the register to pay.

I was thanking him for his help, when he said, "you know, you've got a voice that reminds me of Chesty Puller." not knowing who that was, i asked "is that a man or a woman? with a name like "Chesty" you can't be too sure."

"a man" he said, "greatest marine who ever lived. people forget him now, patton too, nobody knows who they were." i asked if this was in Korea, and he said yep, and then when i asked, he said he'd served in Korea as well.

as we left, he said "look him up- people shouldn't forget about him." So i did. Guadalcanal, Peleliu, and in Korea, Chesty and my new friend saw some serious ****.

"Do you know what it's like to have a graveyard as a friend?
'cause that's where they all boy
    all of them
Don't seem likely, i'll have friends like that again."

the store was jammed, kids were pulling us out, so i didn't get his name. but we can remember what he and Chesty did, and perhaps bear in mind, as we debate and discuss, that they still make 'em like this.

you sure he wasn't just referring to the Amaechi-esque proportions that your man-headlamps may have evolved into?

Maybe basso will take this opportunity to reflect on what it means to live with a modicum of honor and how that applies to the intellectual honesty of his bbs postings...
