Ok, obviously the board is getting kind of boring with the exception of Clutch and Popeye's 200-post scoop-a-thons. Every post I see is either trade-related or mock-draft related. I thought to myself why not have a little fun with those of you who think you can predict what NBA teams are going to do in the upcoming draft.

So those of you with the (g/n)uts to post your picks publically, I will start a separate thread to track your picks. Here are the rules :

1) All posts in the Mock Draft thread I create can ONLY have one message with your picks in them. Don't post any messages about how you disagree with someone's pick or why you think a player will go where you put them. The fact of the matter is, just like a Blazers/Pacers final, nobody cares.

2) You can have only ONE post in that thread. You can't post your picks multiple times in multiple messages. If you do, I will piss you off by taking only the picks from the first message. If you want to make changes to your picks before the draft, you can do so by editing your existing message in that thread. You can make any number of changes you wish, just so long as you only edit that one post and you only end up with one post in that thread.

3) All I care about is the first round. That means 29 picks for those of you counting.

4) I've set up a spreadsheet to tally correct picks that appears to be working. Since the spreadsheet will be doing the tallying based upon names of the players, the names you post must be the EXACT spellings of their names. If the spellings don't match, you don't get a point. If you can't spell Olumide's last name, look it up on the Internet somewhere. And for those you that keep spelling DerMarr Johnson's name as "Demar" or "Demarr", you better learn quick. I'll try to catch typos, but I'm not going to specifically look for them.

5) Again, since the spreadsheet will be doing the tallying, and I will just be cutting and pasting your picks into it, the post with your picks must be of an exact format. It should have the players in order of draft picks, with one player per line, and that's it. It should look like this:

Kenyon Martin
Stromile Swift
Chris Mihm

So basically what you'll end up with is 29 names on 29 lines. Do not put numbers or team names or anything else on each line, just the players' names. Just make sure you have 29 at the end.

6) I need some suggestions from you guys as to how to score this. I can simply calculate how many picks you get right and who gets the most picks right, or we can assign say, 1 point for every pick correctly picked in the top 3, 5 for correct picks in the 4-10 range, etc.

7) Only your picks in my mock draft thread will count. I don't care what you post in some other thread.

8) A cut-off date will be decided upon later. After that date, no modifications to your mock draft will be counted.

Lastly, do not post your picks in this thread. I'll start another thread later to get all the picks. I just want to see who all would be interested and also gather suggestions as to how to score this. If there's not much interest I won't do it. Meaning there has to be at least about 5 or 6 people interested.

Oh. And there's no prize other than admiration from your peers. Sorry.

DOD- Sounds great. I'm definitely interested in it. Here would be the scoring system I would use. Count picks 1-5 as 2 points per correct answer, picks 6-15 as 5 points per correct answer, and picks 16-29 as 8 points per correct answer. That way you get more points for predicting the picks that aren't so obvious, but not too many more. For example, I think the first five picks should be more than 1 point a piece like you were referring to. With players not wanting to go to certain teams, it can be difficult so at least give 2 points. Then give 5 points for the moderately difficult picks between 6-15, and 8 for the difficult ones between 16-29. I think that's fair, what do you think?

DOH! DOH! DOH! Great idea Dr of Dunk ... so good in fact we've been thinking the same thing and have been planning a Mock Draft contest on the site. We were thinking about just doing the Top 13 picks though ...

Maybe we can combine plans and work on this together. We want to release it closer to the date of the draft since lots can change between now and then ... but perhaps releasing it sooner with the ability to edit your picks before a final date would be best.

What do you guys think?

Your suggestion is noted. Trying to get the point system is the biggest problem. I may end up doing it 2 ways. The most points and the most correct picks. Something makes me think not too many people will nail very many of these picks, especially after #15.

DOUBLE-DOH!!! DOH!!!

Sorry, Clutch. Had I known that, I wouldn't have posted this.

Sure, it's no problem. If you want, I'll let you take over from here. If you need help, I can help out. I'm not sure how you were going to handle it. Like I said, I was just going to use a fairly simple MS Excel spreadsheet and cut and paste into it. I'd let the spreadsheet do the tallying.

My personal opinion is that everyone should be allowed to edit their posts up to 1 or 2 days before the draft. Then you stop any further changes to their picks by locking the thread. Anyway, if you need help, let me know.

I think its a great idea and its obvious I am going to win because Im great at this stuff. But I think going with top 13 is better because 29 is really hard. NBA.com has this same thing for the draft and they had a different kind of scoring system. I did it every time they had it and not to brag or anything but I won in 97 and 98.

I got 55 out of 60 in 1997 and 51 out of 60 in 98. I won Hats ,a draft pin and a T-shirt!

I messed up on one pick but it messed me up alot and took me back! For example ..

Say Kenyon Martin is suppose to go first and I say first pick, then I get like 3 or 4 points for being correct on each one. But say if Kenyon drops and becomes the 4th or 5th pick and I said 1st pick, then the grading would mess it up and it screws you up. I dont remember how they did it but I'll try to find out.

SO LET ME SAY GUYS, BE AWARE THE DRAFT KING IS HERE.

DoD -- no reason at all to apologize. It's a great idea and certainly you posted it first... we've just been kicking it around.

Here are the snags I've run in to.
[*] I don't really have a good scoring system in place yet, though The Cat had some good ideas. I do think calling #9 correctly for Houston should be worth a little more
[*] I think it should be just Top 13. I want as many people involved as possible and average Joe fan who just follows the Rockets isn't going to know the value/merits of Jason Kopono going late first round. Besides, I think the exact Top 13 is tough enough.
[*] We'll have to do this based on unique email I'm guessing.
[*] I need some sort of prize too. Might be a good reason to get started on those clutchcity.net T-shirts.

Clutch,

Top 13 is fine. Now that I think about it, I'm not sure doing the entire 1st round is a great idea. I don't think I can think of 29 players without resorting to looking them up on a web site. LOL! I was just afraid of how many ties we'd end up with, but hopefully a point system would rectify at least some of that.

I'm not sure how to handle the "unique" user stuff. I'm also not sure how you can stop people from submitting more than one time. Unique email won't stop that.

As for the prize, t-shirts would be cool. With the way some of these guys post mock drafts, I'm not sure they care about prizes, though.

If the trades happen on draft-day/during the draft, I'm not sure there's much you can do about it.

I see the points you guys are trying to make, but let's try and make this more challenging. If we're not going to do the top 29, then I think we should at least do the top 20. This is just a suggestion, but I think it would make the competition a little more competitive. Anybody can have a good chance at getting most of the first 5 to 10 picks. Let's at least expand it some just to see who really knows their stuff. I think 20 would be a good number. I know me and DOD wanted 29 at first, and then Clutch and some of the others wanted 13. Also, if we do top 20, it can give you a chance to make up for an unexpected early pick, making you not have to be perfect to win. How about 20?

How about 10 points for the first pick, 20 for the second, 30 for the third and so on. Giving more points for later picks is good because they are tougher to pick. Here's something else I was thinking of; you get bonus points for getting alot of picks in a row to start the draft. Example, if you guess the first 9 picks in a row correct then you get 90 points or 50 for the first 5 picks. But you can only get these bonus points if you guess from #1 to begin with. Like you can't get 40 points for guessing 9-12 correct, only #1-#whatever. And if you guess the Rockets pick correct then you get 2 times the points for that pick. Oh ya, I almost forgot. To break ties on overall scoring you can see who started with the most correct picks in a row. For example, you 2 people are tied then you give it to the person who correctly pick 1-8 rather than the person who pick 1-5. Anybody got any bright ideas on some creative scoring methods?

I think the simplest idea is to give points for each pick equal to the number of the pick.

For example:

1st pick = 1 pt
10th pick = 10 pts
20th pick = 20 pts.

The 9th pick can be the "money" pick (30 pts).

If you do it this way, you can almost be guaranteed that the scores will be spread widely for even the smallest variation (i.e. you'll cut down on the amount of tie scores ).
