So I just got an email from the Starwood Preferred Guest (SPG) program that as a Platinum member, anyone that I refer to SPG will get automatic Gold Status from now until February 2011 (it normally takes 25 nights in a year at an SPG hotel to get Gold Status). This works only if you've never been an SPG member in the past.

Gold status gives you free upgrades, higher floors, 4pm checkout, etc. LINK

Plus, anyone who I refer also gets 1,000 bonus Starpoints for every night stayed until March 31, 2010...pretty sweet deal.

Hotel chains in the Starwood family include Sheraton, Four Points, St. Regis, W Hotels, Le Meridien, and Aloft.

To put the value of this in perspective, I was just in San Francisco for work for five weeks, and racked up 75,000 Starpoints during that time. You can get free nights (no blackout dates) for as low as 2,000 points/night.
