    Hey guys.

So two weeks ago my girlfriend came to visit me in Austin. Most of the kids in my apartment complex were home for the summer, so she parked in one of the many open spots in the gated garage. Of course, she ended up getting towed the first night. Strangely enough, when she went to ask the management company if there was any sort of temporary pass she could buy for the rest of her time here, they told her that she didn't need to worry because her car wouldn't be towed due to all the open spots. They were very surprised to hear that her car ended up getting towed. (Quick side question... can a towing company tow a car without the apartment's knowledge/permission?)

But here is the kind of sticky situation. Her dad had just bought her a new Camaro with a ground effects kit. We inspected the car when we picked it up, and I had never looked at the kit before, so when I didn't see any scratches on the car or the kit I assumed it was fine. Well she called me tonight to say that the front part of her kit was missing and she couldn't figure out when it happened. When she described it to me I realized that was how it looked when we picked it up from the towing company and somehow she didn't notice. (I thought it looked kind of funny, but we were both looking at it, so I figured she would know if it looked different.) She feels like a complete idiot, but we are both almost 100% sure the thing must have fallen off during the tow.

So my question is... Is it safe to assume that we are S.O.L.? Or is there anything we can do?

Sometimes toe places have agreements with the complexes where they just scan for passes and do automatic toes. Sometimes, it's just up to the person whose was assigned that spot. She just might have parked in a spot belonging to someone who is still in town.

I doubt there was much you could have done if you noticed it missing when you picked it up but by now, there is absolutely nothing you can do.

Sorry man. I've been towed from West Campus in a "visitor" spot. It sucks.

That was awesome. I wish I had thought of it... you think they would have taken the 19,330 pennies it would have cost me? (Yes, it cost us $193.30 to get back a towed car... ridiculous.)

That was brilliant! Seriously made my day.

I usually frown upon fratboy pranks, but this was just brilliant. Almost didn't watch it because it was 10 minutes long, but glad I did.

The cop was pretty funny too.

There should be a bumper sticker that says "If you tow, I'll pay in PENNIES."

You should've known better than to let her park in one of the reserved spots. I'm sure you could've found a spot on the street. I'm going to assume it was J&J that did the towing. They came and towed 4 cars one night from my apartment complex, 2 of which ended up being their fault but they refused to own up to it. Scum of the earth.

Yeah it was J&J. The street thing came to mind, but she was kind of worried about leaving her new car out on the street. I just assumed that since there are no assigned spots (everyone just parks wherever in the garage) that no one would call her in since there were plenty of spots available anywhere in the garage. Obviously in hindsight I regret it, but I wasn't even worried about it at the time. I always see cars in there without a permit (even in the school year) and had never seen one get towed until her. Bad timing I guess.

who cares, her dad will just buy her a new one.

but yes, they can tow without permission of the complex. The person's spot she jacked probably called. Spots are reserved for a reason

A few years back I got screwed out of my job. Before consulting with an attorney, I requested a copy of my personal file. They told me I had to pay 10 cents/page. It totaled $4.10, if I remember correctly.

When I came in to pick up my copy on my way to the attorney's office, I paid those bastards their $4.10 in pennies.

One of the greatest moments of my life, in a middle-finger-to-the-man kind of way.

Techically there are no reserved spots. There are a certain number of spots and a certain number of permits, but no one is assigned anywhere. So, based on the thirty or so empty spots I had observed for the last month, I assumed everyone was parking very comfortably.
