I went to Galveston with my wife, my sister and her boyfriend and went to the public beach there. I sat on the sea wall and tied my shoes. Standing up, I threw my hands out in front of me for counterbalance as I stood up, and my wedding ring when flying into the air. I watched as it fell into the weeds at the bottom of the wall. I called to my wife, but -- as is her custom -- she couldn't talk and hear at the same time. So I jumped down and went to the place I saw it fall, but once on the ground I wasn't as sure where it landed. So I didn't immediately see it.

A beach bum nearby saw it go flying and he started to help me look. Soon after, my wife finally noticed and she and my sister and her boyfriend came down to help. Then, two beach bum friends of the beach bum started looking too.

After 45 minutes, we had to give up and go home. Some family members suspect one of the bums found it and kept it but I won't give in to that notion. I told them when I left to keep it if they found it and told them what it cost so they wouldn't get screwed at a pawn shop.

So, after much finger-rubbing, it was time to get a new ring. After learning that that's not the sort of jewelry Jeff does, I was about to go to a store when my father called to offer his ring. He never wears it because he's a contractor and rings are not a good idea on the job site. And now it's way too small for him. He had gotten the ring in France (actually, I think my mother is the one who bought it) and it's a purer gold than you buy in the States -- 18 karats. (My grandfather on the French side had a wedding ring that was thinned down to a mere gold wire after years of wear, because the gold is more pure and, therefore, less durable.) So I accepted that instead.

But, it's too big for me. I don't want this ring to slip off like the last one. So I need to get it resized. So today, I (by 'I', I mean my wife) called the jeweler and found it cost $25 and takes 2 to 5 days to make it smaller. Does that seem right? They'll be taking gold off this ring and will still charge me $25? My original wedding band was about $100; this one is probably more, being 18k. They won't be taking a quarter of the gold off, but they'll be getting a sizeable chunk. How much trouble can resizing possibly be?

My wife has had a couple of rings resized (made smaller). ~$25.00 seems to be the price she paid (whether or not that's reasonable, I don't know).

You can get it done at a jewelry show for $10 down or $15 up (size wise). However, most jewelry shops charge $25 to $35 for resizing.
