In the basketball thread, it just struck me how many good BASEBALL movies there are.

My favorites:

1. The Natural: One of the few movies I liked better than the book. Roy Hobbs homer at Wrigley Field has to be the all time greatest sports movie moment.

2. Field of Dreams - Kevin Costner may suck as an action hero, but he's the king of the baseball movie. Besides, how kick ass is having hall of famers in your corn field... and who can forget, "Build it, and he will come?"

3. Bull Durham - The minor leagues are fun, too.

4. Bang the Drum Slowly: Robert DeNiro... in a baseball movie? Can't beat that.

5. For the Love of the Game: Yeah, I know it tended towards sappy at points... but I loved the no-hitter.

I know that list is heavily waited towards the modern, so I fully expect you older folks to disagree .

So?

The Natural is the best sports movie of all time, I wish they would release it on DVD.

Others not mentioned.

The Bad News Bears.
Eight Men Out.
Brian's Song (ok not a baseball movie, but darn good anyway.)

The Natural is the bestest, especially the soundtrack.

It's a shame that no one's made a good Babe Ruth movie. That one with John Goodman really blew chunks.

Oh for those who have HBO, I saw a preview the other day for a movie made by Billy Crystal called 61*. It's about the Maris/Mantle home run chase. It looked really awesome and I think it debuts later this month.

Definitely Major League. "A League of Their Own" wasn't bad either, Tom Hanks was good in that.

Along with the other ones mentioned, I'd like to add "Soul of the Game", which was an HBO movie about Satchel Paige, Josh Gibson and Jackie Robinson. It was very good. It's available on video and DVD. I highly suggest renting or purchasing a copy.

One baseball movie I was really looking forward to was "Veeck As In Wreck" starring The Greatness of Bill Murray as The Greatness of Bill Veeck (and directed by that guy who did Wild Things). Unfortunately, the film has been put in turn-around and may never get made. Still a great book, though ("Veeck As In Wreck" is). If you can find a copy of it, I highly recommend reading it.

I love Field of Dreams. Makes me proud to be an American, and makes me want to go play baseball again.

Both A League of their Own and Field of Dreams were classics.

What about worst baseball movies? I would have to consider "The Fan" with Robert De Niro and Wesley Snipes as a candidate for that one.
