Thanks CCR. And thanks to leebigez for inspiring CCR to do this. The Magic made a mistake by not doubling Yao early and often. You have to be physical with Yao, and crowd him. And I think early doubles are probably more effective on him than late doubles. You have to force him to make quick decisions under pressure.
Is it just me or does no one see what i see. FEED the DAMN ball to Yao and we win. its a inside outside game. just like the champion rockets did. give the ball to yao and have shemac outside when yao gets doubled kick it out.
if that's the case, we would have won in 06-07. yao's PER that year was 29 and his shot attempts in that series was 18 with 9 fts a game. we need balance and that's what we're getting. the reason yao is playing so well the past few games is that we don't go to yao all the time, and thus when he does get the ball, the doubles don't come as quick, and yao can do his thing. pounding the ball to yao has proven to be disastrous. we need to continue the balanced attack so teams cannot focus solely on yao (or tracy when healthy). therefore, they're fresher in the 4th to finish teams, as has been the case the past 2 games.
What I like about that whole graph... they love reposting Yao. And Yao likes to kick it to the wing a lot when he repost if it is there. That is very encouraging.
Do we REALLY need one of these threads after everygame? I mean come one, these are the HOUSTON ROCKETS, not the Yao Ming Rockets, or the Houston Yao Mings.
Double-team Yao should be the last resort. Like JVG said in the last 2 games (prior to the Magic game), the best way to limit Yao's production on the offensive end is to front him. Actually there's another way to stop Yao, i.e. to get him into foul trouble as early as possible. Many teams have figured that out these already, especially our Western rivals. I watched the game twice yesterday. I always have that feeling that Howard wasn't giving his 100% when he played against Yao and he was limited by those early fouls too. Yao wasn't playing exceptionally well in the game too. Perhaps there's some sort of respects between these 2 big men. The inside-out game is the correct direction. Now we just need to be patience and let Yao and TMac get back to their vintage form. When the 04-05 pick-and-roll between TMac and Yao is back, we know our team is starting to dominate. GO ROCKETS!
I do not see any subjective comment from the op. He used his own time to scout the game and provide us FACTS to facilitate our discussions. And the discussions are looking for the right direction for Rockets success at the offensive end. His effort is very much appreciated by many Clutchfans here. You can stay out of these threads if they are not your cups of tea.
If you respect your opponent, you will play as hard as you can, any thing less than that you are sending the message "you are not worth my effort". DH was in foul trouble and played tentative because of that. Yao is still not 100% (maybe will never be).
I dont care who shot most, give our most efficient guy the damn ball and we win at last, that euough. Limit someone's shooting attempts may influence our offense, I dont want to our offense being ugly...
What doubles? Orlando's one of the few teams that will try and defend Yao one on one. If Yao's up against single coverage dump the ball into him, over and over and over.
Magic doubled 12 of 37 touches (32.4%) Wizards doubled 10 of 33 touches (30.3%) Thunder doubled 8 of 25 touches (32.0%) Not including touches where Yao was outside the post/paint (and thus unlikely to be doubled) it looks like this... Magic doubled 11 of 32 touches (34.4%) Wizards doubled 10 of 26 touches (38.5%) Thunder doubled 8 of 19 touches (42.1%)
Part of that was Dwight being in foul trouble too. I think they would have let Dwight go one on one with him more often if he hadn't gotten into early foul trouble. and Thanks again for the chart ccr!
I like how in the recent games, we have been going to yao early and often, getting some quick points to start the game. Then once he starts getting a little tired, Tracy and Ron start shooting.
I updated my post to reflect what I feel to be more accurate numbers. They indicate that the Magic actually did double less when Yao was in "scoring" position, although it's still a very small sample of games.
CCR, Could you do an average one too, where it shows where Yao is getting the most touches and is most effective? This is a great thread. DD
Hmm...I'll start thinking about how I might do it. I'll probably do a break down every 10 games or so.
