http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/sports/6076698.html Riding several games of hot perimeter shooting, guard Von Wafer went from a long shot to a place on the Rockets on Friday afternoon. The Rockets on Friday chose to place guard D.J. Strawberry on waivers, two days after they also waived forward Mike Harris, keeping Wafer. Wafer made 52 percent of his 3-point attempts in the preseason, 41.2 percent overall, leading the Rockets to a win in Memphis with 23 points. He averaged 12.4 points in an average of 24 minutes per game. Strawberry, acquired from Phoenix for Sean Singletary, also played well, averaging 8.2 points on 41.7 percent shooting. With Friday’s move, the Rockets trimmed their roster to 14 players, one fewer than the league maximum, but there are no immediate plans to make an addition to the roster tat already takes the Rockets’ payroll past the luxury tax threshold.
expected, i don't think we have given up on strawberry. his contract will become guaranteed when the season started. Wafer's salary is not guaranteed till December.
With this move it makes steve francis' job even harder to get into coach's rotation. good move by management we have battier and artest. dj strawberry was a specialist just like them but without a decent shot. In the end i still think we should have kept him for the bigger and strong pgs in the west.
Francis isn't getting back in the rotation. I think there would be benefits of keeping both Wafer and Strawberry, but I think Wafer fits a little better considering that our health concerns are at SG/SF right now. He's the only SG off the bench with legitimate size and the necessary athleticism. It's unfortunate to see Strawberry go, but it wasn't the right situation for him, in my opinion.
The Rockets keep Wafer as insurance of injuries. Wafer wont play too much and probably will be cut after a couple of months after T-Mac and Battier get healthy. I hope Wafer can stay the whole season. A VERY, VERY good shooter. I think Wafer is the 2nd best shooter behind Barry in the Rockets.
Wafer must have been psyched to hear he made the team. I like the decision. Adelman's specialty is offense so the more offensively-capable players the better. Worst case, Wafer does nothing and we get rid of him in a few months. Best case, he sticks and turns into a JR Smith type scorer off the bench. Like somebody said above, T-Mac is still recovering so adding some insurance at SG makes the most sense right now.
really guys, really? You think it was a mistake to let go of roster fodder that could always be brought back when necessary? really? You are worried that steve will have to compete harder for a job because we kept someone who can shoot? really?
So what was the fuss over the reported extra day for Adelman to decide? I wonder if Strawberry's agent had found another team with a more solid offer and had requested for him to be waived?
Like Landry last season Wafer will now get his chance to work his way into playing time. By the way does anyone remember how Landry did it last season?
I think neither would have played much, but I think it's the right choice. This team needs all the 3pt shooting it can get.
