    Thanks on the heads up.

I don't know that there is any sports announcers in Houston other than Adam who know anything about basketball.

    It's very disappointing.

Edit: I take that back. MattJ does good too.

Adam Wexler (610 Night Show) is pretty knowledgeable also. Charlie Palilo on 790 is pretty well rounded on all sports topics, his Rockets knowledge is good.

Looks like they will only keep one between DJ and Wafer, no big surprise.

The DJ or wafer pick really depends of if they think francis can contribute in my opinion. if they steve steve is still got it, they'll cut DJ. if not i think DJ might have an even chance to make it.

Is Charlie on in the afternoons?

I haven't listened to 610 at night. I may have to check out Wexler's show.

Ok, I listened to it and made the following notes. I think I got all the important basketball-related stuff:

    [rquoter]

    Opening Comments
    - Artest has probably been the best player in preseason
    - Battier getting the MRI tonight
    - Steve is working hard, but it will be a while until he's ready to play
    - Yao's been moving well, a little off-sync because of the layoff.
    - Thinks Scola was the best player not in a US jersey. Scola's been a little rusty in the preseason, but he'll be ready for the season because he always works hard, makes hustle plays.
    - Dorsey will struggle with fouls and turnovers. But he's shown improvement in practice. Unlikely to contribute this year, but we have him for 4 years

Caller: Getting guys that can penetrate off the dribble

    - Feels that Brooks addresses that to an extent. As for Von and DJ, one of them will likely be kept for a stretch
    - Need to make tradeoff between players with certain abilities and financial flexibility. "Can't use bullets too early"

General comments on preseason, and where the Rockets are at
    - Defensively, not where they want to be
    - Want to be more up tempo. Can do that with Brooks, Barry, Scola, Landry
    - Need shooting to improve
    - Overall, need defense needs to be in top 2 or 3. Need offense to move into top 10.

Caller: Acquire another big man for facing big teams like the Suns
    - Rockets plan on adding a 7-footer sometime this season, Deke is high on the list.
    - Not very worried about adding a 7-footer, concentrate on adding good players. Last year, Rockets played better when they went small than when they went big.
    - Feels comfortable with Stoudamire being guarded by Scola, Hayes, or Landry.
    - We're more effective when we're small, more penetration, got the line more, turned it over less. COmfortable with that.

How concerned about T-Mac's knee and shoulder?
    - Rockets feels good about Tracy. He'll have to manage injuries, he's had a positive attitude and working hard to get as close to 100% as he can.
    - Rockets are optimistic because his body has been responding well. There's been a gradual improvement throughout the preseason.

Caller: Is there "solidification" on Von Wafer?

-Tough decision between Wafer, Strawberry, and Harris. Finals call hasn't been made yet.
    - Each brings a different strength, it may come down to injury status of certain players.
    - We'll definitely have an open spot on the roster to start the year

    Thoughts on Aaron Brooks?
    - A bright spot in the preseason. Looks like he'll be productive in the backup-PG spot. Rockets believe in him.

What would you change about preseason?
    - No overtime. League should schedule it instead of teams. 4-6 games would be fine.

    Rule changes added this year?
    - Instant replay rules added. They're going to put more emphasis on illegal screens. NBa is harded sport to referee.

In the West, what teams did the most to improve?

    - doesn't put too much emphasis on improvement; important thing is the bottom line
    - New Orleans with Posey, Lakers kept their core and will be good, Utah will always be good, the Spurs will be good as usual. Those 4 teams are ahead of the pack.

What does Bynum add to the Lakers?
    - If he's where he was at prior to injury, and he is on a steep improvement curve, he'll make them very formidible.

    What about the East?
    - Still thinks Boston is far and away the best team, and will be in the Finals.
    - Cleveland, Orlando, and Philly looking to catch up.

    Brent Barry?
    - a tremendous acquisition, great on the court and also off the court.
    - he keeps things loose, as smart basketball-wise as anyone with the Rockets (coaches and staff included)
    - knows the offense as well as anyone on the team already
    - stepped in to be a team leader

Carl Landry? What did he work on?
    - His jumpshot and free throws have improved. He's attacking the basket well, worked hard in the summer
    - he, along with Artest and Brooks, have had great preseasons.
    - he's an underrated player.

Chuck Hayes. Where does Chuck fit?
    - For Chuck fans, when we're healthy he'll play a little less. Between 5 and 20 minutes on a given night, depending on defensive matchsups.
    - still far and away our best post defender.
    - he thinks he'll still play every game.
    - Some fans are negative on him, and he's mystified about it. When CHuck's in the game, good things happen.
    - He feels Chuck is an underrated guy as well.

I wonder if Morey thinks we were a better team last year when Yao wasn't on the court. The raw numbers suggest "yes", and he said that he thought the Rockets were more effective last when they went small.

It would have been fun to see him squirm around that question. :D

I thought there were rumors Harris is going to play for a Chinese team. If he does then we can keep DJ and Wafer. Anyhow, I think all three players are playing about the same level and probably not going to see much PT.

I think Harris is out. Morey made it seem like the decision is most likely between Wafer and Strawberry. And there's no guarantee that whichever we bring in will even stay with the team the whole year either. Whichever it is that's brought in, it's apparent that they won't be part of the core, regular rotation.
